I just flew solo with a 5 month old on a 9 hour flight to/from London.
The red eye on the way there was amazing! He fell asleep just after we went through security, slept through the entire 9 hour flight and woke up at the rental car terminal in London.

Coming back, it was a daytime flight and he was awake and cranky. The red eye was MUCH better....

I did once when I flew solo w/H...The flight wasn't bad, she slept some (although she did have a blowout on the plane which was catastrophic), but when we landed and I had to wake her by carrying her in the Bjorn so I could get luggage and catch the shuttle to the car, then get her in the car...From pretty much landing until we got home was frantic epic screaming overtired disaster. That was honestly one of the most stressful days of my life, and I learned that no matter the price, we will fly early always! She's been on several other flights early in the day and done soooo much better, even if we had to shuffle her around nap time and she couldn't sleep....

Probably 60% of the problem that night was that I was solo and had too much going on at once combined with a miserably tired baby. If DH had been with me, it probably would not have been soooooo traumatic. But it was definitely traumatic!

We flew with my son at 6 months, including one flight around bedtime and it worked great- our flight was shorter (Nebraska to DC), but LO still fell asleep soon after we boarded and slept pretty much the whole time, and if he shifted and woke a little, nursing and/or paci and/or bottle would send him right back to sleep.

@edelweiss: for an few hours, but he was so interested in what was going on around him, it was difficult to calm him down.

I've done it, my son was a disaster only because we had to get him out of his bucket seat when we went through security, which kind of annoyed him.

I think it just depends on your LO. No experience, but I feel like my LO would sleep just fine on the plane. Either way you never know which would be better so I wouldn't bother spending all that money to change it.

I once flew a little after bedtime (like 8pm ish) and I bought the tickets because they were the cheapest, not thinking about how DD would be on the plane. It ended up being AWESOME! I was flying by myself with DD who was 2 and a bit and DS who was 4 months old, and they both passed out almost immediately and slept the whole way. Once we landed, that was a little hairy getting home and getting to bed (we didn't get home until 1 or 2 am), but the flight was fantastic.

we are going to take a cross-country flight to california when LO will be 7 months old. the flight leaves at 6:30pm, which i originally chose because it's around his bedtime and i figured he could sleep. but now i'm worried that i should have chosen a daytime flight to not mess with his nighttime sleep at all, and am considering changing the flight (even though it will cost an arm and a leg).

it's one of those things where it probably doesn't matter what i do, things are unpredictable and his sleep will be screwy anyway with the 3-hour time difference, just wanted to hear other people's experiences.
