@stiletto_mom: That is awesome! I love Air Canada, too. I don't know why some people complain about them. They are waaay better than most airlines I've flown with, and have good customer service. I'm so glad you got this resolved.

@Torchwood: I thought of it before but didn't think it would apply to me since Zika is a problem in central america. Showed up in Florida but no outbreaks there. So I didn't even mention it. She did.

She was just amazing. Once this refund goes through I'll be writing in a commendation letter.

It was legitimately so stress free. Like she didn't have to help me at all because I went through a third party website. But she went above and beyond for me. Totally sweet on the phone, just calmed me down. My anxiety level calling there was like 8, and I'm at a nice 0 right now. ^___^

UPDATE:

God I love Air Canada! I've never had a single bad experience with them.

So I called the airline directly and explained the situation. The girl is a miracle worker. She pulled her manager who said that I fell under the new Air Canada Good Will Protection clause for pregnant women and the Zika virus.

She told me not to even bother talking to the third party company and that they'll take care of me and get my refund processed (for both ME AND MY HUSBAND).

All I have to do is provide supporting documents that I'm pregnant and doctor is concerned about Zika.

PHEW!

When you booked they sent you an email with all the terms of your ticket. What does it say? It should outline all the terms of cancellation. Buying through a third party usually means air canada won't deal with you at all.

This sounds about right actually. Sorry. :( There are not many airlines that allow cancellations anymore. Even with my LO having a fever of 105 deg on the morning of our flight last year AND with trip insurance, we still only got covered for her flight (not DH's, even though he stayed home with her).

I have a trip to Orlando in two weeks and we have trip insurance on it. You may still be able to buy trip insurance if your trip isn't for awhile. However, pregnancy alone still won't be cause to get a refund. You'd need to have some sort of complication.

I've only been able to get airline credit when I've had to cancel tickets (as well as pay a $$ cancellation fee - same basic deal you were offered) so that sounds pretty standard to me. I think it's probably incredibly unlikely that "pregnancy" is an exclusion, unless you have a doctor's certification that the pregnancy is medically excluding you from traveling.

Are you sure that's the policy? That seems unusually generous. I think most airlines offer a full credit within 24 hours of booking, but after that you get a credit, less whatever the cancellation fees are.

Yeah, live and learn. Next time, I would spend the $20-$30 for the trip insurance. Or put it on a card that has trip insurance. I've started paying for trip insurance once I got pregnant and it has been a lifesaver. For two trips alone, I've gotten reimbursed for over $1000 in fees. Well worth the $60 I spent on it. I've had medical reasons for both times I've had to use it.

Sorry about those fees. I would take the trip as a babymoon. Lay out by the pool and take it easy.

Oh, a regular normal pregnancy with no issues is not an exclusion. You'll have to have a medical reason and a dr approval to sign off on it. Let's hope you have a happy and healthy pregnancy and the trip goes well.

Pregnancy without medical complications I don't think is an exclusion. With trip insurance it usually has to be purchased within 30 days of booking the trip. In general canceling flights is pretty expensive. :(

Not sure there's much you could do :bummed:
Any way you could just go and lounge by the pool, maybe get a prenatal massage? Should be a lot less than going to universal for 3 days (considering food and everything). I'd rather do that than get an airline credit that I may not even be able to use because of pregnancy.

So now that I'm pregnant, we want to cancel our trip to Orlando. Everyone's spending 3 days at Universal (I really don't want to go), and we'll need that money for baby stuff.

I booked flights on Air Canada through Flight Network ($800 total) and was told cancellation would be $75pp. That's reasonable. I said to go ahead with it. Then they say that not only is it $75pp now, there is some sort of extra $200 fee and the rest of it would be given as a credit that expires in a year!!

What? Air Canada's policy is free cancellation up to 24 hours prior to departure. I understand that because it's a third party agent, that I may incur a fee, but losing half the cost of the flights and the rest in credits? No way.

I looked up my credit card, and I don't have trip cancellation insurance on it. I'm wondering if I should go ahead and buy trip cancellation and cancel the flights later.

Under what circumstances does insurance cover cancelled trips? I think pregnancy is an exclusion.

UGH, I'm just so frustrated with this. Any advice?

UPDATED AND RESOLVED BELOW!
