@didal5: So DS got his tubes in March of 2016 and I posted this in April 2016, I'm pretty sure we stopped the Flonase by June of that year, as the tubes started doing their job and draining everything, and the air quality in our house in the spring and summer is way better than in the winter so the dust wasn't bothering him as much. The next winter he didn't need the Flonase at all -- he got a few ear infections but at least could use the drops since he had the tubes so they were way easier to treat. Although having them be under anesthesia is scary, I'd 100% do it again (My second DS is getting tubes in a few weeks!) because it helps drain the fluid so much and keep it at a much lower level than without them. For DS he started talking just a few weeks after having tubes because previously his entire life his ears were blocked with fluid which makes hearing difficult. Good luck!

DS got a nasty nosebleed after a week or two of using Flonase. I don't know if it was the Flonase or he was just spraying too hard, but I stopped giving it just in case.

@HappyBaker: My next step for my little one is the tubes, I'd rather not if its not necessary. How long who you say it took your little ones ear to drain all that liquid? Did you have a break period were you would stop the nasal spray and restart again?

My 2 year old suffers from ear infections. Our ENT recommended Flonase everyday to help with the pressure in the ears, and for when the allergies start bothering the eyes. ENT said it was perfectly find to continue with their Zyrtec.

Spoke to the pediatrician and got the green light so we're gonna give it a go! Allergist said it will take about 5 days to take effect for those who may be interested as well.

I didn't know you could give it to kids! There isn't a day my LO doesn't have a runny nose, so I would be curious to try if the pediatrician recommended it.

My older daughter has been on it since December. She was just over 4 at the time. She's also on Singulair (chewable tablet) and Zyrtec/Claritin for her seasonal allergies. We've made it almost through Spring here without an allergy flare up.

Our ped is who prescribed all of the above for her.

@HappyBaker - thanks for sharing! I haven't started him on it yet but plan on calling his ped this morning. Good to know it's been so helpful for your son!

@Lighthouse: I'd check with your pediatrician to hear their take, but we give it to our 15 month old daily and have since he was 1. He has a pretty severe dust mite allergy and without the Flonase he is super congested / snotty and his ears fill up with fluid (even though he has tubes). We dealt with almost a full year of ear infections and getting tubes only to realize his whole fluid situation was caused by the allergy.

Our pediatrician said they have to say not to use it on littler kids because they haven't done enough studies / testing on it - because not many people are signing up their small children for research like that.

It has completely cleared up my son's congestion and fluid issues, but we'll certainly reassess every 6 months or so to make sure we still need it. For us, the Flonase is better than the ridiculous amounts and dosages of antibiotics he has to be on when he gets an ear infection from the fluid!

@THOU - good point! I double checked with the allergist and he said it was fine but I'll check with our pediatrician tomorrow too - doesn't hurt.

@Lawbee11 - I did see they carry a children's one but I checked and the dosage and ingredients is exactly the same as the adult one - so I just got the adult one as it was half the cost. I've heard a lot of companies market products as for "babies" just because they know parents will pay more for it.

@JMARIONSMITH - thanks for sharing this!

My 3.5 year old has seasonal allergies for the first time this year and while our pediatrician recommended Zyrtec and Benadryl to try first she did say that if that didn't work to move on to Flonase.

On the recommendation of his allergist, my son has been taking 1tsp of Zyrtec daily for over a year now to help with his allergies/eczema. On our most recent visit, we discussed how my son's nose always seems congested/blocked up and my thoughts as to whether he might have a deviated septum. The allergist said kids this age (almost 3) can't have a deviated septum and recommended we try starting him on Flonase once a day in addition to the Zyrtec. However, I'm reading on the Flonase packaging that one of the side effects could be delaying growth?? That seems like a pretty big side effect, especially for a little one who still has a lot of growing left to do!

Have you ever used Flonase on your child or heard any recommendations for/against it? This allergist is very well known so I'm thinking he wouldn't prescribe something that's not safe...but this one had me pause. Thoughts?
