We will be doing a floor bed for our toddler. Instead of transitioning her to a toddler bed or a twin size regular bed we will do a floor bed so we don't have to worry about her falling out. I don't think I would do this for a baby but this floor bed I believe is the montessori way of doing things so maybe they begin as infants?

DS moved to a floor bed in a Privacy Pop tent at 26 months. We zip him up in it and he feels secure like he did in his crib (he actually loved his crib, but was starting to climb out). He just sings and hangs out in his tent until we get him up from nap or mornings.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I would have some definitely safety checking to do before DD2 could have free reign of her room. But I like the idea of transitioning to an unrestricted bed earlier in life...

I think the purpose of floor bed is that you don't restrict the child's movement in their room. We are toying with this idea, but first would need to secure the dresser to the wall. Right now we always are with LO when he is in his room, unless sleeping in his crib.

so interesting!

DD1 (3.5 years) was in a crib until 2yrs3mos when we transitioned her to a toddler bed. She had napped on cots at school since she was about 14 mos - so we werent too nervous. She has always known to "stay on the bed" when its nap time/bed time. She will occasionally get up to streak across the room for a book or stuffed animal and I am totally ok with this.

DD2 showed me her first sign of trying to climb out of her crib last night. If she pushes it anymore DH and I may have to reconsider her sleeping arrangements. She is 11.5 months now and in a crib still.

For DD1 - I use a door monkey (one of you lovely ladies recommended it to us) and its worked wonderfully. We would/will likely use it for DD2 as well when we do transition her. Our stairs are impossible to baby gate so we need something for sure!

My LO has slept in a floor bed since around 6 months. It doesn't have a frame on it like that one, it's just a mattress made up on the floor. Around a year old she went through a phase where she'd get up and go to the door every night. We just walked her back to bed each time and eventually the phase passed. She loves her bed!

We've had pretty good results with the floor bed at a young age, but my son has always been the type to wake up and cry for help vs trying to get up. That one you posted is so nice!@Mrs D:

I'm sure this is more of a cultural thing as we are asian, so when we travel we sleep on futon on the floor of Japanese relative's house. But at home we also sleep just on a mattress on the floor. So we are all used to sleeping on the floor, and I feel its better for my kids since they move around so much when they sleep (less height to fall from if they roll out of bed)

We didn't really have to train our son or daughter to not get out of bed, they just know that when its bedtime they sleep on the bed. We have a routine for bedtime that they do everyday so maybe that is what helps. My son is sleeping through the night and will stay in the bed until he wakes up in the morning. My daughter (who we just transitioned to a floor bed at 1) does get up in the middle of the night sometimes but she doesn't actually get out of the bed she will sit up and wait for me or my husband to come to her to comfort her so she can go back to bed.

If you are thinking of transitioning to one, you may need to stay in the room with your LO for the first week or so they understand that they sleep in the bed and shouldn't get out to play etc. during the night, but I don't imagine it should be too difficult of a transition if they are already sleeping in a bed of their own.

We have a floor bed without the dancing structure; just a twin mattress on the floor. Right now sincere have a newborn, DH sleeps in there with her so he can get some sleep too. But when he isn't in the room and DD wakes up at night or from nap, we will go to her so I've never waited enough to see if she'd come out.

We have a floor bed and love it! DD transitioned into a "big girl bed" right at 2 and I was worried she would fall out of a regular bed. She has a twin mattress on the floor. I slept on the bed with her for a couple of days until she got used to being in a real bed, and then we were just vigilant about putting her right back in bed and cuddling her in there when she wandered for the first couple of nights. She does get out to get books and stuff occasionally but I just try to monitor the first few minutes of nap/ bed to make sure she isn't bringing things in her bed.

We started using one with LO2 around a year. She gets up when she wakes up. But she haaaated her crib so I'd rather she get up and come get me than lay awake screaming.

So, a family member just posted pictures of her nursery and I am super intrigued by this "floor bed". Wondering if any Mama's on here have used such a thing? I LOVE the concept...but am struggling to wrap my head around how you keep the LO in the bed.
