@Applesandbananas: @sarac: @pui: @Rockies11: @MamaCate: thanks everyone for your take on it. I am getting excited now about this option!

@Mrs. Lion: I read them all I think! They got me both excited but a little nervous about starting at this age. I am guessing for now he will still sleep with me at night but I'll try floor bed for his first stretch of night sleep and all naps.

We did this for a while with our first (I wrote several blog posts about it. I can link to them if you haven't seen them!) At first it was great, but our little wild man just didn't stay in bed once he was mobile. He would fight sleep when he woke up in the middle of the night wanting to wander and explore, and he is really sensitive to becoming overtired. I have thought about doing it with our second, but I won't even consider it until she is solidly sleeping through the night.

ETA: we did move him to a floor bed at 18 months when he was sleeping through consistently and had absolutely no issues with the transition out of the crib. I wrote about that as well if you are interested.

@junebugsmama: We did a floor bed from about 3 months when LO outgrew the pnp bassinet in our room. It was just a crib mattress on the floor in the corner of her room. I was happy with it and we are doing the same with LO#2 when he arrives.

We did baby proof the room which in our case just meant hiding all cords behind furniture and securing the dresser and bookcase to the wall. Once LO was mobile, she always came right to look for us anyway but it was big for my peace of mind. Let me know if you have questions!

With my first we did a floor bed beside our bed - it was actually between the wall and our bed, so if she was awake she wasn't wandering around another room. It was successful to nurse to sleep, but she got too stimulated after a few months, so around 12 months we moved her to a crib in her own room, which was an amazingly seamless transition. With LO#2 we made a cosleeper with an ikea crib, we just didn't put one side up. I can actually lay in it and nurse her to sleep. She's not into bed sharing the same way as my first LO was, so I wanted her to have a bit more room. As far as belly sleeping and bed sharing goes, as long as your little one was mobile, I wouldn't worry about it.

My daughter has slept in a floor bed since she was 2 months old, but I'm following the Montessori way. It's great because I can still lie beside DD instead of picking her up to nurse her, but the real reason I am doing the floor bed is to give my daughter the ability to get in and out of her own bed. She's 10 months now and only gets out of her bed in the morning when she will play by herself for a while before calling for me.

We moved my daughter to a floor bed at 8 months, and it was one of the greatest parenting choices I've ever made. No transition to a toddler bed hassle, ever. My next child will sleep in a cosleeper for as long as she's frequently nursing overnight, then she'll get her own little floor bed in my walk in closet, which will become a tiny bedroom for her. Then she'll move in with her sister when she's old enough.

My LO started out in a rock n play then switched to co sleeping and then to a floor bed. We still cosleep a lot but even when we aren't, he doesn't get out of his floor bed often. He didn't start getting out of it at all until recently and he's 2, but those occurrences are pretty infrequent. We love the floor bed! He was probably 9-10m when we moved to that.

I did some looking into old posts but I want to know a bit more about anyone who may have used a floor bed for an infant. We have a 6m old and we cosleep, and it works well for naps and bedtime as I nurse to sleep. He's just getting so darn mobile, and he wants to start sleeping on his tummy too which I don't know is safe on an adult bed. I like montesorri ideas but honestly I just want something a bit safer in case he wakes up and doesn't start crying. I don't really expect or even want him to start playing alone when he wakes up!
