Oh to answer your other question. We put him on the floor bed I think at around 10 months. We co-slept for the first 2-3 months, transitioned to crib from 3-10 months, and then he was on the floor bed starting from 10 months (he still sleeps on it). We've always had that playpen gate surrounding the mattress so he couldn't crawl/walk off of it.

The floor bed was always in his room from the get-go. From 10-20 months, either me or my husband slept with him on his bed. Actually, we put him down and waited til he fell asleep. Then we would sneak out and watch TV, etc. We'd then go to bed (on our own beds) and if he woke up in the middle of the night, we'd climb into his bed with him and sleep with him til morning. At 20 months, we would still lay with him til he fell asleep, but then go sleep on our own beds. If he woke up in the middle of the night, we would go in and soothe him but then go back to our own beds. Now, he's 25 months and sleeps through the night on his own (on the floor bed).

Hope that made sense!

This is the playard that @chopsuey119 and I got:

http://www.amazon.com/Summer-Infant-Secure-Surround-Play/dp/B000G1YW98/ref=sr_1_5?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1337624398&sr=1-5

Depending on the size, you may/may not need to buy an extension. We have a full sized mattress on the floor and had to buy an extension to have the whole thing covered all around. So it looks like a gigantic crib. :) @chopsuey119 has her mattress up against a wall so only had to cover 3 sides.

@Mrs. Jacks: well, he sleeps perfectly fine on our bed during his daytime naps, which is why I think he'd be okay on his own.

@Coco Bee: We felt pretty strongly about co-sleeping with Lala, so that was a factor too :)

@Mrs. Jacks: Yeah, we don't have any animals. Is that the only reason you waited? I've read some Montessori blogs that start from birth, and some that start at toddler-hood.

@banana: where did you get the gate? What age did your start your LO on the floor? Was it in your room, or his room?

We didn't transition to a floor bed until Lala was a toddler. We have a big dog and we didn't want him to step on a little baby.

Could it be that your baby just wants to be next to you and can feel your warmth? Littlest one tends to want to come into our bed at 4 or 5 am (which means no more sleep for me!) so last night we bundled her a little more and she slept through.

My son sleeps on a floor mattress and he loves it. We put a playpen gate around it so that he can't get out. hehe. We're going to put the mattress on the bedframe in a few months once we install the baby gates on our stairs. Since he's already so used to sleeping on his mattress, we're "hoping" that the transition wont' be too hard! ACK!

I remember @Mrs. Bee posting about this, and @Chopsuey119 also talking about a floor bed..

I have a question. I am considering doing this for my three month old son, who will only sleep on our bed. At first I thought it was smell-related. So I slept with his blankets/sheets but he still wouldn't sleep in the cosleeper next to our bed. I think that the reason is our mattress is much softer than his very firm/hard cosleeper mattress. I wouldn't want to sleep on it either! So we've been considering getting a twin mattress and putting it on our floor to start with, then when he weans from night feedings, put it in his room.

Who has had positive experiences with this? And what did you do when they started to crawl?
