I just put luxury vinyl plank in my ground floor, and I could not love it any more. It cleans up with zero effort, water doesn't soak in, so you don't have to stress about that. It's highly durable, and I never worry about my kids or pets scratching or marring it. It's also really beautiful and feels great under my bare feet. I just love it.

I came in to recommend the flooring we have in our kitchen and bathroom, and after checking google I realized that it is luxury vinyl tile.

The durability and water resistance is fantastic, and we get compliments on our "stone tile" in the kitchen all the time! (but it is soft vinyl!)

We don't have a basement but we did Pergo Outlast in parts of our house and we really like it! It supposedly can handle water/fluids 24 hours which most laminates/woods can't. So far so good and my kids aren't gentle!

We have luxury sheet vinyl. It's amazing. Looks like slate tile, but it isn't cold, which is nice in a basement. Plus, it cleans like a dream. We have two kids and a dog who goes in and out through the basement. We went with sheet over plank because they had the design we wanted, and we weren't installing. I'd image the planks are much easier to install if you're DIYing.

@avivoca: Hmm, yeah. I don't want to have to be careful with water in terms of wet shoes and snow and stuff. Or having to chase around a dripping wet dog.

@gotkimchi: I don't need to worry about stuff leaking, just about mud and snow and stuff from shoes and snow gear. All the appliances are on the upper floors and the water stuff is in an unfinished area of the basement.

@Littlebit7: I was worried it would be expensive?

@avivoca: What don't you like about the laminate? I can't even imagine hating something more than the carpet we have, lol. But I don't want to spend a lot of money on something and still hate it.

We just did new flooring and we're told the vinyl plank was much better for water then laminate if your worried about something leaking ie under dishwasher or washing machine. That being said, I did not like the look of it so we went with laminate. I also like the wood look tile but it's more costly to install due to all the labor

Luxury Vinyl Planks! Durable and waterproof. I wish we had done that instead of laminate.

In the next few months I'd like to look into replacing our basement flooring. Currently it's berber carpet that my dog's nails have destroyed. Our garage is connected to the basement and it's how we continuously get in and out of the house, so the basement is essentially our mudroom. So I'd like something durable, easy to clean, and waterproof.

I don't want to spend thousands of dollars on something super high end when it's just the basement, but at the same time I don't want something that looks junky either. I'm considering either laminate or vinyl plank, but I'm not really sure which is better.

Does anyone have any experience with these? Is one better than the other?
