I flew with my 5 week old (four separate flights, each about 5 hours!) and it wasn't too bad... My toddler was the more difficult one :/

I nursed a ton (she doesn't like pacis either) and baby wore a lot... Typical newborn care but just on a plane. I personally hate bringing too much on board, and i wasn't dependent on my boppy, so didn't bring my it... I just used the armrest and a small airline pillow.

You can check in the car seat and stroller at initial check-in or at the gate, whatever you prefer. If at the initial check-in, you can just use your sling afterwards, but if you want to stroll all the way to the gate, the stroller does have to go through security with you which can be a little annoying... depends on your gear. If you gate check it, I guess it's also nice that it will be ready pretty much when you get off the plane at your arrival gate. If you check it in with luggage, you don't get it back til it's on the baggage claim carousel.

Good luck!

Bring a change of clothes for you and your husband in your carry on, plus enough diapers for each hour of flight (doubled if more than 6 hours).

Even though it's a night flight, you might be near someone that keeps their light on to read or whatever, so bring a light blanket to drape over your shoulder/baby's head to shield the light.

Bring snacks for you to eat, you might not get to eat at the designated mealtimes...we've had this happen just about every flight for some reason!

Good luck...most people are really cool about babies on board, but sometimes you do get those jerks!

@cyneswith: I'm a total "lactivist;" I'll breastfeed anywhere. And if a dirty old man was staring at me I'd probably say something. I have no doubt in my mind I'll be able to breastfeed, I'd just rather have my pillow there!

The advice I've gotten is to nurse on the way up and down to help your baby adjust to the changing cabin pressure. (They need to swallow to keep their ears from hurting.) Also, have you seen the travel boppy? They take up a lot less space than the regular boppy. I think you can get them at Target.

Ive flown tons of times with my Lo and have nursed her without problems. It's definitely easier flying with an infant than an older baby so you should be fine. I would take a paci if you have one and make sure you buy a huge bottle of water before you board!
Good luck!

The only comment I have is that I HAVE seen successful nursing on a plane. So... it can be done? Just be prepared for a leer or two - there was a dirty old man across the aisle who was trying desperately to catch a peek, and that was WITH the dad holding up a receiving blanket for privacy. Ew.

Eeeeek...on Wednesday DH, NavyBaby, and I will be flying from San Francisco to Boston and I'm definitely freaking out a bit...

It is an overnight flight so with any luck NavyBaby will just sleep the whole time, my plan is to have him in a ringsling so hopefully I can catch a few Zs myself!

So...any advice on flying with an infant? What will I not survive without on the plane? What can I just check with our bags and not worry about?

Also I'm considering bringing my Boppy as my carry-on. There won't be enough room in my bag to check it and although I CAN nurse without it, I'd rather not for a whole week. And since DH and I are sitting next to each other on the plane I might even be able to use it on the flight...am I completely nuts??

Thanks everyone!
