I flew at 9 weeks and then again at 11 weeks (cross-country). I never really had m/s though so it was fine. I was really tired, but I was always tired in the first tri anyways.

I'm back from my first set of flights!

Between the B6, bonine, zofran, sea bands, lemon drops, and crackers, I only dry-heaved a couple of times. (Guy next to me kept turning directly in to my face and yawning open mouthed, uncovered mouth and he had awful breath. WTF. He was in the window seat. TURN TOWARD THE WINDOW!

Anyway, thanks for all the advice!! Next flight at 11 weeks. Not looking forward to it. They are longer flights.

@Mrs. Lovejoy: I would absolutely NOT go through a full body scanner no matter what. Just say you opt out, and if a co-worker asks why say that we don't yet know the long term effects of the radiation and you rather not take any chances. You can just leave it at that. FWIW DH's radiology professor highly suggested not going through for that exact reason, and we travel enough that I would never take any unnecessary chances.

There are a couple of different kinds of scanners out there; I've seen signs that say that at least some of them are safe for pregnant women. If you're not sure, you're always allowed to opt out. Then you get that lovely pat down, but I've convinced myself it makes the TSA employees more uncomfortable than it does me, so I've put up with it and even giggled: "Now I'm going to run my hand across the inside of your waist band. Sensitive area between your legs; I'm using the back of my hand..." etc. Awesome.

I traveled a few times during my first trimester, and while I also was one of the lucky ones not to be sick, I would agree with the advice to bring snacks! Only you know what you like/tolerate, and you can't be sure you'll have much time on your connections to grab anything. (And you won't have your previous energy to run through the terminal!) And if you're traveling alone, pack a light carry-on and/or have a mental game plan for looking pathetic and getting help with the suitcase in and out of the overhead bin! I used to pride myself on doing it myself. Now I don't even try.

@Baby Boy Mom: @baby98765: That's a GREAT idea about bringing something that smells nice!!

My 6/7 week trip, I leave early in the morning both ways, and it's a 1 hour flight/2 hr flight/1 hr flight (2 connections).

My 11/12 week trip, same. Early morning, but just one connection. 1 hr/3.5 hr.

More worried about the first than the second trip; with my motion sickness I never do well in takeoff and landing. Music helps but they don't let you use it during those portions!

@Mrs. Lovejoy: Could you just play it off like they make you nervous in general? A lot of people don't like to go through it, pregnant or not. You could say your family has a lot of cancer in family history and you're concerned about the impact this could have... or something.

Shoot, you guys are making me nervous about the full body scanners! I'm flying next week (which by then will be week 7) and I'm flying with my boss and a few co-workers who don't know I'm pregnant yet. We're all traveling together so I have no idea how I would slyly ask not to go through the scan machine without them thinking something was up...

I had a 20 hour flight around week 7. Going there I was OK but the flight home was horrible. I didn't have enough to eat, and of my surrounding seatmates, one was hacking coughing and the other had the worst BO. I was dry heaving. My advice is to bring plenty to eat and drink, noise cancelling headphones and something pleasant smelling, like a lotion or something you can put on if odors get gross. I don't know how far you are traveling but if it's a long flight, also bring a blanket, pillow, cozy socks- whatever will make you more comfortable and help you sleep.

My suggestion is to bring something that you like to smell. The worst parts for me was when they were bringing out food..the smells were tough with the m/s. I had a mini perfume bottle that I kept smelling over and over to try to cover up the smells.

I flew at 5 and 6 weeks! It was fine, but I started developing nausea right about the time of my return trip.

Suggestions:
1) take preggie pop drops & ginger candy
2) take sea bands
3) locate your airsick back the minute you sit down
4) sit on the aisle, preferably close to the bathroom
5) get a prescription for Zofran
6) stay hydrated
7) bring salty & healthy snacks + water (you can get soda or ginger ale when they bring it by if you need bubbles)
8) move your legs/get up and walk around a lot (for blood clot reasons, not nausea)

In regards to water - if you take your own, they'll toss it. Airport water is expensive. Hubs and I avoid this by taking in an empty water bottle and filling it at a water fountain or asking Starbucks to fill it for us. Also, Starbucks will give you free water in a cup, not bottle.

I took 8 flights in my first, second, and third trimesters. I always brought my own water bottle, ordered ginger ale as my drink, and packed my own more substantial barf bags (thicker plastic bags). I never needed them though, even though I had bad morning sickness through my first and second trimesters. The only time I was close was when the lady in the seat across the aisle from me projectile vomited and didn't use a bag to catch any of it so the rest of the flight was pretty gross. If you are still concerned, try taking some OTC Bonine (I usually only take a quarter to a half of one). It's a pregnancy category B drug.

I went through the body scanners and didn't have any issues with it.

I did 9 flights (including two 13 hour flights) between weeks 9-13. It was fine! I wore compression socks on all legs over 4 hours. I also got up and walked around -- mainly to go to the bathroom -- at least once every 1-2 hours. I also brought my own snacks: dry cereal, chex mix, fruit. I drank lots of water and ginger ale on the planes.

I decided to opt out of the full body scanners, but I went through the x-rays.

@nodakiddo: If you can't pick your seats, 1) check in 24 hours before the flights and try to pick them then, and 2) get to the airport really early (2+ hours early for domestic) and tell them at check in that you are pregnant, etc, and maybe they will give you the bulk head seat where you have a little more space. BUT, then they probably wouldn't give you the exit rows, since they might not want you to be in charge of opening the emergency doors.

I can't help with any of the other questions!

@Honeybee: this is encouraging! I just bought seabands on amazon a little while ago, so they'll be here in a few days. I normally take dramamine when traveling due to motion sickness, so it's good to know that's possibly safe too... thanks.

I flew multiple times (4 or 5 flights?) with my second pregnancy between 7-10 weeks (I think). It was great, actually! A lot of the research I've done (and my own experience) is that morning sickness actually improves with travel. The idea is that changes in altitude/biometric pressure help relieve some of the symptoms. Sure enough, I felt pretty good our whole entire trip, and the severe morning sickness I experienced with my daughter didn't kick in until we returned from our long vacation.

As far as the plane ride goes, talk to your doctor, but Dramamine is generally considered safe during pregnancy. Also, Seabands and MotionEaze are natural forms of nausea control that are also safe during pregnancy. I normally get motion sickness, so that plus morning sickness is tough, but with medications I was able to make it through all of our flights, plus traind rides and extended car rides.

I flew from St. Louis to London at 8 weeks. I wore some seabands and actually got LESS motion sick than normal. It was totally fine.
