@Beebug: Thanks! :)

@daniellemybelle: I did end up getting the gate check bag, but I may end up just checking it with all our other luggage. I don't think I'll ever do enough flying with a kid to be able to justify the padded case (although, I wish I could fly that often!) And awesome tip about blow outs! hah! Thanks!

@travelgirl1: Thanks for all those tips! I am really glad this is a short flight, and I'm hoping that over the hour I don't have to change his diaper at all, but I will bring a couple just in case! (I guess that includes all the time spent in the airport as well?)

I have used the Ergo every time I've flown with LO (at 6 months, 9 months and 13 months) an each time it's been the biggest help, mainly for keeping her contained in the seat with me. They always make me undo it for take off and landing though, which is frustrating.

A few more tips about flying with a LO: Instead of having all your diaper supplies in one bag, have a couple of plastic bags with a few wipes and a couple of diapers in, then every time you need to go to the washroom you don't have to lug your whole bag. Also, a few small dollar store treats that LO hasn't seen before are great to pull out throughout the flight. We also found that she was seriously entertained by our water bottle, empty tea cup and lid, go figure :silly:

I never gate check the car seat because I don't want to lug it all the way there. We have a special car seat case that we got on Amazon for about $40 & it's padded. We check it at the counter with our luggage & then baby wear all the way until we get on the plane. They make you unstrap the baby for takeoff.

Make sure you pack an extra outfit because something about flying makes babies blow out!

@.twist.: we fly westjet always and they are so great with whatever baby gear we've brought! We carried her the first of three flights she's been on with us 8w, 14m an 16m, the other two we just carried her with no stroller.

Good luck!

@.twist.: I've flown with DS quite a few times on my own now and will be again in a couple weeks at 15 months. It was easier when he was less mobile. Flying on westjet is great. I always check the car seat, they put it in a plastic bag. One less item to carry around when you are on your own. The first few times I wore him in the carrier and they let me wear it through security, I've never had my hands swabbed. Last time I took the umbrella stroller and I had to take him out so they could check it. The stroller is left at the door of the plane, you have to fold it but if someone is there they will help you.

Flying out of Edmonton they take you right up to the front of the security line if you have a baby and if they are under two you can bring as much liquids for them as you want. They've never checked anything I've had, even a sippy with water in it.

Good luck on your flight.

@.twist.: we fly all the time, so my best tip is to do what you would ordinarily do if you were out shopping and needed your hands! I use Ergo when I am flying alone, and the stroller when I am flying with DH. I check everything else (especially the car seat) so we don't have to lug it with us. the only thing we ever gate check is the stroller if we're bringing it with us. but if you have an LO that's usually in the carseat/stroller than just do that - seriously don't sweat it and do your regular thing. airports are crazy helpful to parents ! if you're flying from Calgary or Edmonton they will let you through with baby in Ergo - the only airport in Canada I have ever had a problem with was Kitchener/Waterloo. also when you fly with a lap baby all the airlines are super good about trying to find you a seat with an empty seat beside you.

Thanks so much for all the tips ladies. I definitely will be giving myself some extra time and will not be horrified when they try to swab me for bomb residue! HA!

We're flying to Edmonton in two weeks and my understanding is that (with Westjet anyways), is that you get to take 2 pieces of baby stuff (carseat, stroller or playpen) for free in addition to your luggage. You have the option to check it with the rest of your luggage or take it right up to the plane (really handy if you have the stroller/carseat combo, because then you just roll it up). You leave it at the door of the plane and they put it under the plane for you and bring it back up for you before you get off the plane.

I gate checked the seat, because I figured: 1. We'd be screwed if they lost it and 2. They may not tear it up as much by putting it on the plane last.

I just wore E through everything in my Ergo. We took him out on the plane and let him crawl all over us. We recently had a 5+ hour flight with a 10 month old, so 1 hour will be totally manageable!

We flew with DS at 2 months old and I carried him through the airport in the Moby and they made me take him out through the metal detector (so stupid, because I left the Moby on and carried DS through... Not much different!). They swabbed my hands (word to the wise, once, the swab turned postive on me and I had to go in a room and get the full pat down. They said it could've been my makeup foundation or lotion on my hands... So wash your hands before going through security!!).

They made us put the stroller and infant seat through the X-ray (they fit). At the gate, we put the stroller and infant seat in separate bags and gate checked them. They were waiting for us when we came off the plane! I have heard they make you take baby out of the carrier for take off and landing, but they didn't either time for me (maybe they didn't realize it was a carrier since it was the Moby?)

Good luck! Give yourself an extra 30 minutes at least for all the extra handling! We were surprised how much longer it took us with the baby!

We've always checked our seat with the luggage and never had an issue. Most (all but 1 time) the airlines put the car seat in a plastic bag to protect it.

I always wear LO through security and they've always swabbed my hands after for bomb residue. Only takes about 30 seconds, it just can be a little alarming if you are not expecting it.

If you bring liquid formula/juice on, usually they will test those too in the machine in security. They do NOT have to open it to test it and should not open it.

Try to encourage your LO to nurse/bottle or pacifier during takeoff and landing - really helps to keep their ears from hurting!

Just flew from NYC to Turks and it was relatively painless... I wore my two month old in a carrier through security and like lamariniere mentioned they just swabbed my hands for residue.
Once on board, I nursed him during take off and had a travel boppy with me which made nursing more comfortable and he fell asleep on it during the entire flight.

@.twist.: We used this one:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0009RNXNA?pc_redir=1401446085&robot_redir=1

I would at least put it in a large trash bag though just so it doesn't get dirty. I can't imagine the one we bought would protect it much if it were dropped. I think some airlines have plastic bags for you to use though but I have never tried.

I brought the Ergo all 3 times I flew with 3... never used it. She preferred the stroller. I gate checked the stroller with it's bag (We have a City Mini, we got the Baby Jogger bag for it) and we installed the carseat on the plane.

Definitely gate check a carseat and stroller. Checking at the counter voids your carseat warranty, I believe.

Hopefully it's during his first nap, but he is not great at sleeping if there is a lot going on around him.

just a warning about what happened to me - maybe it won't matter as much with an 11 month old. I flew with a 5 month old. I had him in the carrier and he had fallen asleep - yay! i went through security and they INSISTED i undo the carrier to walk through! WTF! no rationale as to why (I asked and argued and said "um, the baby is asleep, that will wake him!" and it of course woke up LO. I am still pissed when i think about it, in case you couldn't tell ;)

The actual flights were okay though. I had read somewhere that flying after their bedtime is easiest because they will sleep through - and that the case on our flight home and it was very easy and nice. On the way there, we had to entertain him, but the carrier definitely helped.

I have flown with baby in the ergo and they automatically ushered us to the metal detector instead of the newer scanner. We curb checked the stroller (in a padded bag) and then gate checked the car seat, also in a padded bag. They did take the seat out of the bag to inspect it since it didn't fit through the x-ray machine so give yourself an extra 10-15 minutes just for that hold up. Otherwise it was a piece of cake.

If you aren't taking a stroller, wear the baby through the airport. You are allowed to baby wear through security, but they will swab your hands for "residue". You will most likely have to take the baby out of the carrier for take off and landing, but you can baby wear during the flight. You don't have to check it, you can just put it in the overhead compartment or under the seat in front of you aren't using it.

Edit: as for the car seat, there is always a lot or debate on the boards about what is best. I have always baggage checked ours and it has been fine.

I've been reading through a few of the flying threads because we have our very first flight early next month (just me and L). I noticed quite a few people mention flying with a carrier.

Can anyone walk me through the logistics? I realize this may be a dumb question but I haven't done a lot of flying personally, and haven't ever flown with a baby, so any tips would be great.

Do you bring the car seat as carry on? Check it? I need all the details because I'm starting to panic!

Besides the ergo (which is my biggest worry) any other flying tips with an 11 month old would be great.

Our flight is ~1 hour.
