Thanks everyone for your comments. Obviously, I know I'm not the only pregnant woman to ever fly, but it always helps to have reassurance!

While your stepmom does come from a place of good, the stress she's causing you is more than you'll ever experience flying. The study she points to was for "active duty flight status" which is an active duty pilot. Not a passenger.

DH is a pilot in a combat zone. I promise you, you cannot replicate that kind of stress as a passenger on a commercial airline. Unless, of course, your stepmom thinks you're going to fly the plane? ;)

I flew at 8, 9 and 34w and Maddox is the most well-adjusted baby I've know. I do attribute his good nature to my low stress levels during pregnancy, but you're not a combat pilot and a few commercial flights are not going to raise your cortisol levels in a way to affect your baby. Enjoy your trips :)

I went to Europe for 10 days at 20 weeks. I purposely didn't tell most people until I came back to avoid the "haters". I can't believe people feel so strongly about something that is none of their business! I'm so sorry about your stepmom!

I did get a few comments such as "weren't you afraid something would happen" or "weren't you worried about the food" to which I said, well, I'm the type of person that is more superstitious that something would have gone wrong had I stayed home.

Just do what you feel comfortable with and you'll be fine! (Although I DIDN'T walk through a backscatter machine)

I've been on 3 round trip flights since becoming pregnant and am leaving tonight (hopefully!) on another one. I'm 28 weeks. I haven't had any issues at all- my flights were at 6/7 weeks, 1 at 12/13 weeks, and 1 at 26/27 weeks.

Only reason I'm cautious for this one is because I had some unexplained red bleeding the other day. My OB said I wasn't dilated but we're having an ultrasound done to make sure it's not an issue with my placenta (it was pretty close to my cervix at my 20 week scan). If everything checks out today my doctor gave me the go ahead to fly.

I think your stepmom has good intentions, but I don't think there's anything to worry about unless flying makes you super stressed. I've seen other pregnant women on every flight so far!

I think you need to say exactly this to her "Just because I'm doing things differently than she would doesn't mean I'm making wrong or dangerous decisions." and then let her know the discussion is over. She is welcome to her own opinions but she is not welcome to beat you over the head with them.

I flew at 23 weeks and 25 weeks and I'll be flying again at 29 weeks. My doctor has absolutely no issue with this so neither do I.

ETA: I selected yes in your poll because I had a number of people around me (mostly coworkers) ask me if I was sure I should be flying with a super judgy tone.

If she could, she'd probably live her life in a plastic bubble. I'm trying to stay cool about this, but really don't like that she's accusing me of not thinking about my babies. GRRR!

I've already flown once this pregnancy, at 14 weeks, with no adverse reactions or issues.

She's causing more stress by continuing to raise this issue than any stress that I could get from a flight!

I will be 10 weeks on Sunday and we are leaving tomorrow for St Thomas. My doctor told me I had nothing to worry about and not even to worry about the walk through machines for security. I am planning on flying again sometime in October as well.

she sounds a little....extra super duper careful about everything, lol! I'll be flying at 27 weeks, and probably a few more times before that. Just pop some headphones in and relax. Flying isn't near as stressful for me as it is for some people...I enjoy the magazine reading time! It is rude of her to keep insinuating that you're basically a dummy, though, and don't know that it's not safe. I'd just tell her your doctor said it was ok and that's final

I agree with you that her concerns are coming from a good place and yes she is right about the wireless phones emitting certain types of radio waves that can be cancer causing. She just sounds like the cautious type of person who doesnt take chances in life. I would just ignore her as much as possible in situations like this and not let her stress you out just because you have differences in opinions

I've actually had the reverse situation. I'm opting out of a family wedding the weekend I turn 34 weeks and my family is all "why can't you come, nothing bad will happen?" Ugh. You will be totally fine flying at 20-22 weeks. Ignore your step-mom.

I have a couple trips scheduled for next month, all of which I'll be flying for, both for work and one personal trip to visit family up north.

I've already discussed these trips with my doctor and she sees no reason right now why I can't fly. My next appointment is the day before my first trip, where I'll get everything checked out again. If I'm still all good, I plan to go. If not, I have no hesitation to cancel the trip.

My stepmother, who is a bit of a hypochondriac, is absolutely appalled that I'm planning to fly "so late" in my pregnancy (these flights are taking place while I'm 20-22 weeks pregnant) and is vehemently trying to argue against me doing this, saying that I'm basically putting my twins at risk for no reason that will potentially affect their health adversely later on in life.

Her reasoning is that flying causes raised cortisol levels and that will transfer to the baby and potentially cause ADD, etc. If you're so inclined, here are the two links she sent to back up her reasoning:
http://www.livestrong.com/article/513444-can-stress-affect-a-pregnant-womans-baby-in-the-womb/

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/4023161

I'm really upset at her insinuation that I'm not putting my babies' health first, and also, when I clicked on the second link about flying causing raised cortisol levels, it was a study done on active duty military personnel flying in cargo planes, who are obvious flying on planes in much more hostile and stressful conditions!

I know her concerns are coming from a good place, but I'm still pretty frustrated with her right now. Just because I'm doing things differently than she would doesn't mean I'm making wrong or dangerous decisions. Can I add too that this is a woman who will not allow cordless phones in the house because they'll give you brain cancer.

Thanks for reading my vent. :) Anyone else get flack for flying while pregnant?
