If you bring liquids that will spoil once opened (like formula/milk), tell them so - they have machines they can run them through, unopened.

We fly regularly and always bring pouches, Cheerios, and other snacks and have never been hassled or even asked about them.

I've also never been asked to go through the scatter scan machine when I'm with LO; in the few airports where I was in line for one they have always specifically directed me to just take LO and myself through the standard metal detector.

I have LO suck a paci on the way up and down for her ears.

Good luck!

ETA: I always bring a verified copy of LO's birth certificate when we fly but we've only been asked for it once, when she obviously a little baby and nowhere near 2 years old!

@ustechie: Shelf stable, like the ones you get for almond or rice milk in the unrefridgerated section.

If you need to bring food onboard, I recommend going with factory sealed containers, they are not allowed to ask you to open those. If you need to bring on a special milk, your best bet is to bring it an tetrapack box.

@ustechie: For ears popping, I would give him Cheerios or something crunchy during takeoff and landing. If he still uses a pacifier, during those times would be good to use it.

Good to know! The other concern I have is his ears popping. Anyone have a problem with this?

@ustechie: They never have made us go through the x-ray machine with DS, we've always been able to carry him through the metal detector. As an added bonus, the parent who carries DS through never has had to go through the x-ray machine either - I doubt that's a rule, but that's how it always tends to work out.

We always fly with DS in his carseat, which works out well. Bring some things for him to play with (in a pinch, the plastic and styrofoam cups from the drinks cart are very entertaining), and have a great flight!

@ustechie: every time I've flown with kids they direct us to that line instead of the x ray.

@Ms.SK: thanks for the link! I briefly looked at the TSA website, but didn't come across the parent's page.

@beaker: yeah, I don't have a problem with the metal detector. Are we able to just go through that and not the X-ray?

You can totally bring drinks for him, however they are allowed to ask you to open it, so get something with a screw top. Are you ok with just walking through the metal detector instead of the xray?

You don't need to bring any form of ID for minors. However, I brought a copy of his birth certificate just in case.

This should help with basic Q&A:

Moving day is quickly approaching and we'll be flying from Ohio to Utah. We were planning on him sitting in his car seat- britax advocate- and purchased a travel base with wheels to transport it around the airports. We figured this is best since we'll need the car seat for the rental car anyway. Does it make sense to do it that way?

The rest I'm a little unsure of. It's my understanding that we each get a carry on (my son included) and a personal item. I also think that I'm allowed to bring snacks and meals for him (he's got food allergies, so this is a must). What about drinks? Do juices and water for him need to follow the 3 oz rule? Also, I plan on declining the xray screening and opting for a pat down for myself (26 weeks preg) and my son (will they even screen him?). Lastly, what documents will I need for him??

I just feel a little all over the place and am not quite sure what to expect as this is the first time we'll be flying with a toddler. Any insight or advice is appreciated!! TIA!!
