We've flown several times with my 9 month old (doing it again on Friday!) and have never needed to present her birth cert (though we always have it). If it helps, I think a photocopy of the official cert is fine if you don't have the original (from what I've been told at least) - that's all we carry!

I use a Cosco Scenera as our travel car seat, it's not as luxurious as our other seats, but it is very light and has a slim profile. For $35 ( I bought it on clearance in a random color) I don't care if it gets wrecked. I do gate check it and for that, I prefer to have it in a bag so that the straps don't get tangled on anything else. I have a simple $10 car seat bag with a nice big piece of duct tape on it with our last name, super classy, lol.

As for the flight, you kind of just have to prepare for the worst and then be surprised when it doesn't go that badly. I flr with my 8 month old as a lap infant and he did great...he was the star of the airplane!

We have a second carseat for travel since it can be "compromised" by throwing it around under the plane (and don't tell the Car Seats for the Littles people that you are flying without a carseat, apparently its very unsafe to have a lap baby in case of turbulence/accident :-/). That being said, we've traveled numerous times with our now 10 month old and have never bought him his own seat. We've gate checked the car seat, checked it in at the check in counter, and also rented one from the car rental place. You can wrap it up in plastic, in a car seat case/carrier or just let it go naked :-)

Tips for the flight ... baby will cry. It's OKAY. Don't stress. Ours does great on flights but still cries for like 5-10 mins when he's tired on a flight and right before he falls asleep. People can deal with it. He's a baby. He cries. I don't stress about it. Other tips: bring some toys with straps so they don't all end up on the floor, bring some snacks, I also like to bring some BM in a cup or bottle since he sometimes doesn't like to BF. Bring a blanket to cover up or put under your elbow on the plane while feeding/while baby sleeps. Pack a couple diapers and wipes in a separate bag so you don't have to take the whole diaper bag into the bathroom. Bring a change of clothes for baby AND you. Urp happens. Get up and walk baby around the plane -- ours loves to people watch and flirt.

Just breathe, relax and you'll be fine :-)

@MenagerieMama: We've only used it a few times, but it was worth it just for the portability. It had a long strap that made it easily portable over DH's shoulder (or even mine), when we were walking through the airport, etc.

Oh and pack you plenty of wipes. We wiped down the seat armrests and trays since he was still putting things in his mouth. And when we spilled drinks etc they came in handy. And don't forget a blanket. they don't have them any more on flights

We flew when LO was 4 months, 8 months, 14 months. He did great all 3 times. Just give yourself plenty of time to park your car, get things out of the car and into the airport and thru the airport. We have lots of airplane books that we read all the time so that he understands the noises etc. We checked as much luggage and his carseat as possible. That way it was easier to move through the airport on both ends. We bought a bag with wheels to carry the carseat and that helped a lot. We took our jogging stroller since it moves easier and has the place under it for items. I packed a few diapers, a onesie and snacks in our carry on bag. I also packed a few toys that I know he likes. We always get a window seat and I let him look out the window once we are seated and talk about all the vehicles and people moving around outside. Then when we get in the air we talk about the clouds etc. I also try to pre-warn him that we will hear/feel a bump etc. He loves to fly. He was still nursing the first couple of trips. We nursed once in flight the other times we didn't have to because of the timing. I did pack a couple of bottles with formula that I could add water to if needed. I really think the key is giving yourself enough time to take things slow getting through the airport so that you aren't stressed out. If you stress out then they will too.

I did two 7.5 hour flights with LO at nine months old. No car seat so can't help there, but I basically stuck my boob in her mouth the whole flight and it worked a treat. The flight back was tricker as it was daytime and she was sick, but I nursed a lot and let her play with my water cup. I had a couple of toys that attached to her wrist for her to play with... I didn't want stuff she found throw on the floor.

Ooooh my biggest bit of advice, have a change of clothes for LO within easy reach. A blew out all up her back during take off. Awful.

@PurplePeony: They did, but I suspect it was because I asked rather than will be actually used. But of course now I'll worry that if I don't have it it will be a disaster!

@mrsjyw: Is the car seat bag worth it? I was going to get one and then thought I could maybe save the $20 and just find some other way to wrap it up for free. But we'd use it more than once so maybe it would be worth it?

We had a 18-hour trip (two flights with layover) when DD was about that age and it was much easier than I thought it would be. We had a seat for her so she slept a few hours in her car seat. Otherwise, we entertained her with books, toys, bouncing on our laps, walking the aisles, and even some in-flight entertainment (much to DH's chagrin). It's much harder now that she's a toddler -- we flew this past weekend and the 2.5 hour flight felt like eternity!

ETA: I've never needed her birth certificate (although I usually do bring it, just in case). Did the airline say you had to have it?

We flew with DS for the first time when he was 8.5 months, we packed lots of snacks, nursed on the way up and down and he slept nearly the entire flight! We brought a few "quiet" toys and board books, but he didn't really need it! We bought a carseat cover from amazon for like $15 and gate checked it! Our drive to the airport is just under an hour and he did okay going straight from the drive to security/gate.

Good luck!

Okay my second travel anxiety post. First flight (east coast to west coast) with LO next week. I need to go get a copy of her birth certificate because of course I mailed the one we had to get her passport for our international trip next month and it's not back yet. Gah. We will be gate checking her car seat (how to wrap it, garbage bag? buy a giant duffle?) and she'll be a lap infant.

Any tips/tricks for surviving the flight? We're driving to an airport 1.5 hrs away so it'll be a direct flight and we'll rent a car once we're there. LO is BF and I won't be bringing a pump/bottles, and she doesn't take a pacifier. Loves chewing on anything anywhere! Thinking I'll try and figure out a few novel things to bring for her to chew.
