@rrachael: they'll let you wear the ergo through security. They just swab your hands after. You can do it! I traveled across the country and back by myself at 4.5 and 5.5 months. I wore LO in front in my Beco, wore her diaper bag on my back and rolled her carseat in a bag behind me. Three of four times, TSA pulled me out of the regular line and let me use the short cut for people in wheelchairs, so no one was giving angry stares. I brought earplugs and chocolates as preemptive bribes for people around me, just in case.

@Navy_Mommy: ahh, just kidding ... found it. Thanks! :) DId you ever end up doing a follow up post? This is so helpful ... we're also doing a red eye there and a day time flight back. DH was planning to wear LO in an Ergo and then I would transfer to a ring sling on the plane .... but I also have a Mei Tai ... do you think an Ergo would make it through security? I'm so nervous about the angry stares I'm going to surely get .... I just need to remind myself that I'll most likely never see these people again! :)

@rrachael: we flew from San Francisco to Boston when DS was only a few months old. It wasn't bad at all! I blogged about it (last summer) and there's a link in my profile!

I know this is an old post, but I'm bumping it to see if anyone else has tips to add :) We're flying from SD to Boston with our 6 month old next week and I'm trying not to be anxious about it ... but I'm not doing a good job ... :)

Thanks, ladies!

@artbee: I will come back and let you know how it goes and if I have any advice!

@brownie: thanks for the ideas! I have an unsmart phone so no apps for me. We also have only been doing solids for about a week so aren't ready for the food you suggested. I think the idea of easy clothes is great--we are planning on a zip up sleeper to accommodate hot or cold with a few changes. The closer it gets, the more I am feeling like, whatever happens, happens, as long as we get there in one piece!

@looch: Thanks for the info on the carriers--I didn't know you couldn't use them on take off and landing. We are bringing the moby--haven't used it lately but had LO in it the other day to make sure she still liked it and she was happy as a clam.

@Sammyfab: Great idea to bring extra clothes for me too! I have a ton of diapers and wipes--better safe than sorry!

We have some of LO's favorite toys, lots of diapers, wipes, burp cloths, my nursing cover, pacifiers, etc. I think ready or not we will go....I will let you all know how the trip goes!

I am flying with LO in 10 days (he will be 4 months) and I've been doing tons of research! Here are some tips I've found:

-have bab suck during takeoff and landing (nurse, bottle, paci)
-change of clothes for you and baby. Wear something easy to nurse in (if you BF)
-drink tons of water if you BF
-extra diapers and wipes
-don't feel too bad if LO cries because you probably won't see any of the other passengers ever again! :)

Good luck!

I flew with my son long haul at 6 months, and he was a breeze because he wasn't mobile...so It should be pretty easy to keep him contained. I also brought my Ergo, it was good for keeping him close, but it can't be used during take off and landing. Some flight attendants might give you the evil eye for using it at all, so just be prepared for that. I dressed him in a one piece pajama because it can get cool on the flights, worked out great.

Bring a change of clothes (at least shirts) for you and your husband, plus snacks for you guys because you might not be able to eat at mealtimes. Also, bring a light blanket to drape over your shoulder/baby's face in case of window glare or an overhead light nearby.

Most of all, just remember that most people are accommodating.

eta: don't stress out too much if your LO won't suck on anything during take off or landing, my son falls asleep during taxi, so he's usually asleep for takeoff.

Do you have a carrier like an Ergo or Moby wrap? It helps with holding them when they won't do the stroller (my son never did the stroller).

There is this cool flip phone http://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-Growing-Baby-Sounds-Phone/dp/B004VUYSO4/ref=sr_1_2?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1339779003&sr=1-2&keywords=fisher-price+flip+phone my little boy loves and it isn't too expensive. This kept him well entertained at 9 months and it isn't terribly loud (important).

If you have an iPhone, he loves the fisher prices laugh and learn apps like where's puppies nose and the animals one. If you have an android phone, make sure to download Toddler Lock. It is another awesome app for babies.

Bring an extra bottle/sippy with juice/formula for take off and landing. Even if you breastfeed, they may not want the breast at that time.

Bring food to eat. Melts and puffs are good for that age because they dissolve and are kinda slow.

Put them in easy clothes because the flight we were on didn't have a changing table so I changed him on the toilet and taking pants etc off would have been really hard (he was in a t-shirt and baby legs).

Bring 1 or 2 comfort items like a blanket or lovie.

Don't stress out because it will all work out no matter what.

We are taking our first plane flight with LO tomorrow to see her grandparents. We have a direct flight from Arizona to Ohio and I am hoping that we will have an easy trip and that LO will sleep! We don't have a seat for her and are planning to gate check her stroller/snap and go.

Of course I am anxious about making sure I am as prepared as possible for the trip. So, what should I bring that I might not have thought of? What should I leave that I might think I need? What success stories do you have about traveling with little ones?

Thanks in advance!
