@sandy: So sorry you had to use the airport in Mobile. It's my least favorite airport in the world :)

We traveled with LO a few weeks ago at 6 mos and it went really well. I was stressed about securrity too but it was fine. We took her in the car seat and snap and go through the airport and gatee checked both. At security we got the bags (diaper bag and backpack on the belt, then put the car seat and stroller through, carrying LO in our arms. Everyone was really nice and it all worked out so dont stress too much!

My LO is almost 8 monhs and we just had a last minute flight from Seattle to Mobile, AL...it was her first time flying and it wasn't bad/difficult at all. We took an umbrella stroller that went through the security machines and I just carried her through with me. I felt like everyone made an effort to make things easy for us since we had a baby - all men were asked to go through an additional screening (it was the week of the 4th of July) but my husband was waived through since he was with us

We checked all of our bags except for a diaper bag and a backpack full of toys, books and a blanket. My husband handled the bags and stroller through security while I carried LO...it definitely helps having 2 people traveling with a baby.

We also packed our white noise machine and our baby monitor...highly recommend this!

they will definitely make you put your stroller through the x-ray machine, so getting a small portable one is key. i'd also be sure to bring a baby carrier if you are going to do it alone esp for the security check in. if you don't need to do it alone, your airline can give your SO a blank boarding pass, so they can help you get checked into the gate. i'd do that if you can! makes a world of a difference!

also if you are bringing any liquids for the baby, they will check them. either it will take literally 2 second or 10 mins depending on whose doing the inspection so have all that stuff together in one big ziploc bag if you can.

I actually had to hand my 9 month old to another security person so they could sweep the hand held security sensor ALL over me after I carried him through the detector. Not sure if this is something you could refuse to do but I was in an international airport and frazzled by other things so I didn't think about how uncomfortable I was with it until after the fact.

We've flown with Lala a lot! She's flown to Hawaii twice and has been all over the country. Traveling early with babies gets them used to it, so that's a good thing. We just folded our stroller and put it on the belt, but mostly we babywore her. The only annoying thing is that they make you take your sleeping baby out of the wrap for take off and landing.

We flew with LO when she was about 6 weeks old. We have the Uppababy Vista and it wouldn't fit through the machine, so we had to take the baby out, pop the seat off and run the seat through the machine. A TSA agent took the base and inspected it and we walked through the x-ray machine with the baby. I also made sure to have all of her goodies ready and in ziploc bags and so we weren't hassled too much about her formula and what not. We also have Delta Sky Club passes, which was nice because we could kind of spread out and get the stroller prepped for the flight (we use the uppababy travel case-it has wheels!) and get LO in the sling.

Taking the full size stroller was clutch, because it allowed me to store the diaper bag and my small carry on (with extra bottles and what not) underneath. If it had been a shorter trip, I might have just used the sling!

Thanks for all of the advice! I'm less worried about how LO will behave since he's a very laid back baby, but more worried about the logistics of getting through security. It's seems like using the carrier would be best. My mom just told me I can borrow my aunt's stroller too.

@chopsuey119: did you have to take the carrier off to go through security? I have a baby hawk carrier and it doesn't have any metal.

I carried Lo in a Carrier when we traveled. We take our umbrella stroller with us and check it at the gate.
I miss the days of traveling with an infant! It's so much more difficult traveling with an older baby IMO.
Hope you have fun! I wish my fam lived an hour away..! I'd visit 2x a month at least!

We just flew with LO who is 14 months. They actually made us take him out of the stroller and we had to hold him while we walked through security. Then, we had to put our umbrella stroller through the X-ray machine. We also gate checked the stroller, which was a huge help. They key for us was also getting LO to sleep on the plane. He did on the way there, but didn't on the way back and that was pretty painful.

It seems like you will need a stroller while you are there, right? And at 2 mos, she is too small for an umbrella? Would getting a snap and go type base work-- carry the baby in a wrap or whatever baby carrier you have in the airport, then put the borrowed carseat into the snap and go base when you get there? I don't have a LO yet, so I cannot speak from experience, but that is what I initially thought of.
It's nice to see other people say it really wasn't so bad, though, since I will be in the same situation as you soon enough.

We just took a car trip vacation followed by a plane vacation. Interestingly enough, the plane ride was easier IMO.

DS is 4 months old. I put him in the maya wrap right when we got to the airport. I did have to take him out for security checkpoint because there are metal rings on the sling, but I put him right back in. I think he did so great because he was on me the whole time. He could sleep when he wanted, or look around as much as he wanted. If he got overstimulated, he could just turn his head into me and not look. I liked not having to deal with the size of a stroller and the hassle of it.

He fell asleep while we were boarding the plane, and slept during takeoff and half the flight. When he woke up, he was still in the wrap and was cooing and smiling the whole time. During landing, I held him close against me and gave him his pacifier to suck on. I don't think his ears bothered him.

The sucking helps with the ears, I either nursed or gave him his pacifier and he seemed perfectly fine.

I actually sat next to another mom with a baby, and she patted his back firmly when he started to get upset, and that calmed him right down.

It was a breeze for us honestly - I wish it was this easy for all babies!

We just had our first trip last week, LO is 11 1/2 months. We had an umbrella stroller so it was pretty easy, we checked it at the gate. But I think they have to be 6 months to go in an umbrella stroller. We bought LO her own seat because she's soooo squirmy and I knew she'd sit better in her car seat then on our laps.

LO had just turned one when we traveled and we took 4 different plane rides! We used the ergo for some and a stroller for some. We just pushed the stroller through the scanner that people walk through, but we just had an umbrella stroller and then checked it at the gate, check with your airline what they'll allow.

Honestly, it wasn't all that bad, we tried to get LO all worn out before the plane ride so she'd sleep on the plane, which worked out nicely.

My family lives an hour plane ride away so flying obviously is much faster than driving for us. Unfortunately they can't come visit us very often, so I'd like to visit them so they can see a lot more of LO. Right now LO is 2 months old, so I'm looking for some travel tips. I'm going to get a pack n play to keep there and can borrow a car seat.

So how does taking a baby through an airport work? My stroller is fairly large and I don't think it would fit through the x ray. Would they just check it by hand or should I get a cheap smaller stroller, or just put LO in a carrier? I plan for LO to be a lap baby and DH would probably be coming with me on most of the trips.

Any tips would be appreciated! Thanks!
