I flew half way around the world and bought a seat for my youngest who was then 17 months and what does he do? Sat on me the ENTIRE time, literally. Awake and asleep. He's very clingy though. I think it's do-able not to purchase a seat if it's not a long flight. For me, it's a combo of the safety factors, plus I've heard that since kids are used to traveling in their car seat, they can be happier chilling and sleeping there than being stuck on a lap. We were thinking about taking a flight to the coast and the plane is 2 seats on both sides of the aisle.
