The Korean play mats are pretty thick/cushy (more than the foam tiles). They're easier to clean, as well. They can be pricey but they're very durable!

Foam mats...it cost us about $80 to do our entire room and is super easy to clean! Once she's older I'll just get rid of the mats and turn it into a "nice" playroom. Now it's a disaster zone which is fine!

You could get the 4 color gym mats. Not the most attractive, but they are less pieces to pull apart and they could also be used outside and for playing gymnastics later

I am also not a huge fan of our particular foam mats and I wish we would have just bought a big area rug. My LO has been obsessed with pulling the foam mats apart, and she carries the pieces around the house, and they get lost. But do you mean the big, one piece play mats?

Mats for sure. Much easier to keep clean. What I have done, is if it's really cold in the winter, put an area rug on top of the mats.

So I am clearly in the minority, but foam mats did not work for us. They were plenty squishy but as my daughter got older, she could pull the mats apart (we got the Skip Hop ones) and would chew on the corners. We put FLOR carpet tiles in her play area and they've worked perfectly!

I would go with option 3: an area rug with a soft rug pad underneath. Super cushy, not permanent and more attractive than the foam mats.

We will just do Mats then! (My phone keeps changing mats to Mars. Ugh). I was worried we would get them and they wouldn't work out. Then I'd be annoyed. Lol. If you all say they're soft enough then they're definitely the easiest and cheapest option. Thanks!!!!

Go with the mats. A nice fluffy carpet may seem like a good idea, but once he wants to build a block castle/bridge/whatever on it, you'll want to rip it out. Carpet is majorly frustrating when dealing with preschool building materials! Also, it's harder to keep clean... (I speak from experience as our entire apartment is carpeted!)

I wouldn't install carpet over my hardwood. Ever. I would buy a huge area rug or do mats. We have wood floors and while I thought about it when she was younger (getting a softer rug/foam mats) I never did anything and it's a non issue at 21 months.

Boring question I know. We have all hardwood in the house and even on an area rug, I have to put a folded blanket down for T to play in the floor. It's not ideal. His space is limited and still if he lays his head down, which for him is SLAMMING his head down...there's no in between, it still results in a big scary thud.

I took him to my sisters yesterday and laid him in my nieces carpeted playroom and he played for hours with no head banging. He was able to roll and squiggle all over the place. I want a place where he can do this at home because I feel like he's not getting enough floor time as he should because the pack n play is the only place I feel safe leaving him on his belly and that is so small.

I brought it up to DH about installing carpet in our small spare room and turning it into a playroom. He agreed. But now he wants to just put foam playmats down, which will be about half the price of carpet. I'm just afraid it won't be padded enough that I can just let T play without worrying about head thudding. Also when he's walking we won't have to worry too much about falls.

What do you all think? Are foam mats soft enough? Neither of us will budge! Lol
