I was afraid of the foam tiles being unsafe so we got a large playmat that is soft similar to this. We put it on our carpet.

Bumping this thread for more opinions.

Anyone done the skip hop mat? We have hard wood floors and LO has gotten some hard knocks since starting crawling.

i'm not too into the colourful ones, but i've been thinking of maybe getting the charcoal/black coloured foam mats people buy for under thier exercise equipment, sort of like these: http://www.amazon.com/Thick-Multi-purpose-Interlocking-Black-Foam/dp/B003TUBQ0Q/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1350167356&sr=8-2&keywords=foam+tiles+for+exercise
the colour appeals to me, as well as the fact that they are huge squares, so not so easy to jostle out of place/be picked up, etc.

i wonder what the pros/cons would be for that? :)

I've been researching these (one of the downsides of living in a small town is I have to buy everything online) and wonder about how easy they are to clean.

Is it easier to clean than an area rug? Sadly, they're about the same price here (if I buy a cheap Ikea rug).

@Mrsbells: I guess it's different having 1 or 2 kids use them vs a class of 20. I'm sure they are excellent for home use. Just turned-ff for me.

@banana: Thanks! I did go ahead and order a few tiles to make a 8 x 6ft mat which will be a play area for LO. I ordered the borders to go with it

@mrs.bells: no, just the regular borders. no issues whatsoever with the non-sloping borders. I bought the reversible ones that are brown on one side and black on the other.

I bought mine from Soft Tiles and they're great! I got them in brown so that they blend in with our hardwood floors. We have our entire living room covered. We bought 50 tiles. They're AWESOME. Best money spent.

We have the same ones as @Mrs. Wagon. We have 16- I needed 12 to cover the playroom floor and they come in sets of 8. I love having a "safe" place for LO to play since our floors are all tile.

I am sorry to say, but years of working in various kindergarten classrooms have turned me off of these.

I dislike the way that they wear down and the fact that they can be 'picked' at. I'm also a bit uncomfortable with wondering if they are unhealthy/toxic...they just seem so fake to me.

I prefer an area rug.

Thanks everyone. Right now we have 6 tiles by sassy shown in the picture below but I'm not too happy with the quality and want to order the thicker ones by Soft tiles.
OUr floors are hardwood and I just dont feel comfortable putting LO on the hard wood directly

We have about 1/3 of our living room covered in them. I ordered very thick ones from Amazon that were kind of expensive but totally worth it. They've cushioned a lot of really bad falls! Plus they make a GREAT backdrop for pictures :)

We have some that are similar to @artbee's. Ours came with A-Z and 0-9. Put together, it makes a 6X6ft square. We bought ours at Toys R Us for $18.

http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2786146

@Coco Bee: We have hardwood and use them in DS's play area. If we had carpet, we would have skipped them.

@Coco Bee: we have tile floors so its nice to have in the living room, especially near the couches because lo cruises on them and still isn't very steady. Also they're just fun to play with. She loves to pull the letters out and play with them.
