@shopaholic: I agree all nb stuff should have the cuffs. And some 0-3! Our nurses also said to wait to clip nails because they're so soft in the beginning it's very easy to cut the membrane/skin. I still just use a baby emory board and file them while she's eating and it keeps them smooth.

I totally agree! The first 2 weeks we only had 1 sleeper with mitten cuffs so we used separate mittens and they never stayed on. I vastly preferred the mitten cuff sleepers until my LO was about 6 weeks old and stopped scratching her face.

Here's a brands in larger sizes than NB that have mitten cuffs, just in case you (or anyone else) needs them.

-Old Navy has them up to 6 months (not sure about larger sizes, since we're only at 6 months now!)
http://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=37505&vid=1&pid=381637022

-Disney Baby Sleep and Plays have them up to 3 months (even though the picture has them for 6 mo+, they do not have cuffs. I ordered and found this out the hard way).
http://www.amazon.com/Disney-Baby-Girls-Newborn-Winnie-Flowers/dp/B005Q8LZIM/ref=sr_1_8?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1363498387&sr=1-8&keywords=disney+baby+sleep+and+play

-Carters only have them in NB size only (at least that I could find). Not all NB sleepers have them though!

@MerryC: Yeah, we had two nurses and our ped tell us not to cut her nails yet. So I guess we will just go with that for now.

@Mrs. Chen: Thanks! Good to hear another rec. I better order some now! I really need to try and file her nails one of these days. She just has the tightest grip and makes her hands into a fist all the time. And HATES being fussed with when she is sleeping.

@mamabear57: I love the satsuma mittens. Those are the only ones that stay on my LO.

@shopaholic: She is adorable! My DD is a crazy face rubber/scratcher too. I use to put mittens on her but now I just make sure I keep her nails really short. I'm still too scared to cut her nails so I just file them down almost every other day and I run my hands over them to make sure they are smooth, especially the corners.

@shopaholic: Really? I cut my kids nails from day one, and the pedi at the hospital told me I could cut or use mittens. My kids scratched themselves sometimes, but i always put angel baby bottom balm on it and the mark is gone by the next day.

But yes, the foldover cuffs are so much easier than mittens! And so hard to find....like I have them on random onesies in size 6 months, but only a few of my newborn cloths, crazy.

@Shopaholic Thanks for the tip! Maybe I would have better luck in the store than online.

Last night, we put socks on her with mittens over the socks to help them stay on better. The socks, BTW, were the kind that look like little Mary Janes, and they looked super weird on her hands! DH and I couldn't stop laughing.

DD is still a face rubber/scratcher and she's 8.5 months now! I honestly wanted to sew my own mittens when the NB ones no longer fit, but I knew that wearing them wouldn't help with her mobility and hand function. I let her wear them for as long as they fit only because she would really dig into her face and sometimes her eyes! I think I took them off a few weeks before she turned 3 months old. (I had to double-check because I know I posted a video around the same time I took them off).

try socks, the six pack from carters it what I used. My son was a scratcher and I'm ashamed to say that I put sock on his hand till he was just shy of 2 years old. It wasn't just his face but he would start taking off his jammies to scratch. But he kept the socks on and they didn't fall off. No matter how often i trimmed his nails he would still scratch himself up and give himself rashes from all the scratching.

http://www.carters.com/carters/6-Pack-Terry-Cuff-Socks/V_23548,default,pd.html?dwvar_V__23548_color=MultipleColorsinPack&cgid=carters-baby-boy-accessories&start=

Also kickypants carries footed rompers with the fold over cuffs, they call them paws but they are pricey:

@Shopaholic: Where did you buy your sleepers with the foldover cuffs? My LO is a super scratcher/face rubber and she's outgrowing the four NB sleepers with the built-in mitts. Three of them are from Carter's and I thought I could pop on the website and buy some more in the next size up, but I couldn't find any! I recently found some at Old Navy but am not having luck elsewhere.

we had him wrapped in A+A blankets so he didnt really scractch at his face when he didnt have his hands covered. my mom was ALL about covering his hands tho :)

@mrsjyw: Hopefully we only need to use them exclusively for a few weeks! The hospital AND our Ped told us NOT to cut her nails yet. They didn't say when, but I'll check with him at our next appt.

@mamabear57: I'll have to order one of those Satsumas to try it out. We actually have the 2nd ones you posted and those stay on better than the Carters mittens by far! I lost one side for 2 days and was looking EVERYWHERE for that missing bugger! I have a feeling K will have eczema too since I've had it terribly since I was a baby and my cousins LOs both got it too (genetic).

I bought mittens and never used them and I never rolled the cuff. I just tried to keep up with trimming his nails. I would always do it after he fell asleep from nursing. She'll grow out of it and won't scratch her face as much. Plus the little scratches heal quick and you can dab some breast milk on it to help. But my son still does it sometimes and he's 5 months.

We still use mittens because he's a scratching monster due to his eczema. Even thought they're size 0 to 3 months, these ones run larger.

I think it should be mandatory to put those fold-over sleeve cuffs/mittens on all baby sleepers! Baby K loves to suck on her fists and rub her face all over all.the.time! And her beautiful, long, lady nails scratch up her face so fast!

Why do only some sleepers come with the fold-over mitts? Argh! I already went out to specifically get a couple more sleepers with them. I don't even want to dress her in anything BUT the 5 sleepers we have with the fold-over cuffs. Mittens are so hard to keep on. Is this just a newborn thing?

If you have a scratcher, face-rubber, if/when did your LO stop needing some kind of hand cover?
