@Pink Champagne: I ALSO take this one, I think, though my bottle says Nature Made. I get the prenatal + DHA one from Costco... one bottle is about $15 and has 150 vitamins in it (which comes out to about five months). Here is a link with all the deets (http://www.everydayvitamin.com/prenatal-multi-dha.html/?utm_source=CSEs&utm_medium=GoogleShopping&utm_term=NDM102749&utm_content=NDM102749&utm_campaign=ppc&gclid=CPq5262O1rkCFcs9QgodMF0Apg). It has 800 mcg folic acid. The only thing I wish it has more of was calcium, but I eat tons of yogurt and string cheese to supplement  . I have been taking it for the last year and a half. I noticed if I took it early in the day I would feel a little nauseous. I take it before bed now and I have no problems. Also, it smells like fish.

@Ree723: agree, agree. I take the Nature's Path (?- it's from Costco) prenatal and it has 800 mcg. I think that's plenty since you're probably getting some additional from food.

800 mcg is plenty if you don't have a history of neural tube defects in your family. You can always buy a standard folic acid supplement over the counter (usually 500 mcg) but it's not necessary. Also, check the cereal and bread you eat - they are usually fortified with folic acid as well. Dark leafy vegetables (ie spinach) are another good source, so I would guess that you're probably getting additional folic acid as it is.

It is a water soluble vitamin so any excess will just be flushed out with your urine but as I once read, taking much beyond the 500 mcg per day (without medical justification) is really just giving you some awfully expensive urine! Personally, I think you're fine with 800 mcg and I would not spend extra out of pocket for an additional 200 mcg.

I use VitaMed prenatal plus the extra DHA pill from them. I am really happy with it, though can't answer whether it is somehow better than other.

I take all separate vitamins since that's what my doctor told me last year - multivitamin, fish oil, folic acid and calcium/D. I was given a whole bunch of RX prenatal samples today though. I guess just to be "easier" and take one pill? I don't know how much is in the single tablet of folic acid that I take though.

I take Folgard for extra folic acid. My RE prescribed it.

ETA- I only have a $5 copay for it but I suppose it depends on your insurance

I take an additional folic acid supplement with my Vitacrave gummies. Could you just do that? They're really inexpensive!

For those of you who are taking, or who had taken, prenatal vitamins, how much folic acid did you feel was important for you to have? I have been taking Women's One A Day Prenatal with DHA and it has 800 mcg of folic acid. My ob/gyn offers a prescription for vita Med MD One Rx that has something like 1 mg of folic acid. (Its just offered and not mandated for health reasons.) I am struggling with whether or not I should purchase the fairly expensive prescription for the little bit of extra folic acid or stick with the One A Days. Any personal opinions on this issue would be much appreciated!
