You are such a rockstar. I am just totally in awe of your gumption and just... fierceness. You two are doing great. I hope that your appointment goes well. It also sounds like you have some great resources (like the group you're attending); which means that I can't possibly think of anything to add, which means that you have got your bases covered and then some. Way to go!

@aprk: thanks! Honestly, it's a feeding by feeding thing and the support I've gotten from all of you is what keeps me going. I really can't say enough how much everyone's support means to me.

@mewtill: I keep looking for signs of cracking/bleeding but havent seen any, which reassures me that his latch is okay. Im trying to be diligent about air drying and using some breastmilk on them. I also use a little lanolin a few times a day, just to be proactive. there's a mommy group at the hospital each week that I've started going to. The LC I'm working with goes to the mommy group for 30-45 minutes to do weigh ins and answer questions. I'm going to keep going until my maternity leave is over in 6 weeks, it's really fun to talk to other new moms and to get that piece of mind.

@septemberlove: I remember feeling like my son's latch had to be wrong, because it hurt during the initial latch. The LC told me "of course it hurts right now. You're nipples aren't used to it yet; give it time." And, with time, it wasn't uncomfortable at all anymore.

I hope your visit goes well. I went to a (free) breastfeeding support group at our hospital for 8 weeks, mostly to be able to weigh my son after a feeding & get all my little questions answered. Is there anything like that in your area? Maybe a mother's group with mamas who nurse?

@septemberlove: I'm proud of you for sticking with it! It took us three weeks to BF *at all*, so you guys are already doing great.

@Navy_Mommy: thanks :) I was thinking it might be. It's getting easier to tell when he's got a bad latch vs it just being some latch pain.

@aprk: thanks! It's really encouraging to hear that someday this will be a far distant memory. I really hope so.

@emg86: I've looked at a few but haven't bought one yet. The LC wants us to come in at least 3-4 more times so I'm going to revisit the scale once I'm not seeing her as frequently. I kind of hesitate because I don't want to get discouraged if he's only able to transfer a little bit. I'm offering a bottle after every nursing session but once we start to move away from the bottles, I think the scale will be great reassurance.

@MrsF: thanks!

@Kemma: absolutely. The bonding and snuggling is why I wanted to get him to breastfeed. It's really amazing to see him snuggled up close, so peaceful and content.

@Mrs. Tricycle: I'm cautiously optimistic! I want this so badly!!

Sounds like you and your LO are making great progress!

And don't forget that nursing isn't just about baby's nutrition, I'm sure your little guy is also enjoying the closeness and physically benefiting from the sucking action and the feel good chemicals that release when breastfeeding :-)

@septemberlove: I hope it goes well! You're doing such an awesome job. Have you thought about getting a scale to use at home? Amazon has some baby scales that have great reviews. We use an industrial meat scale that is pretty accurate with our doctor's and I weigh her before and after feedings sometimes just to help my nerves when I think she's not eating enough.

You're doing great!! I hated when people said this to me, but pretty soon he'll get the hang of it and you'll look back and barely remember the frustration. One feed at a time!

@runsyellowlites: thanks :) my motherly instinct thinks he's transferring 2oz, my accountant-need-to-see-numbers brain thinks he's transferring 1/2oz or 1oz. I can't wait to get him in there on the scale!

You're doing such an amazing job @septemberlove: I'm hoping that your follow up goes better than expected & can ease your mind some!!! Two 8 minute stretches is great & I'm almost positive he's transferring more than you think! ;)

Can't wait for the update!

I've nursed LO 2x a day since the first appt with the LC. It's hard to gauge how well it's going. At first, I was trying to look at it like LO should've eaten 4oz by bottle at this feeding but only ate 3oz, maybe he got an oz. But after a few nursing attempts, LO's eating patterns are erratic and I'm not sure how good of a gauge that is.

We had our best nursing session yet, he was latched well with audible swallowing for two 8 minute stretches. He popped off in the middle for about a minute, just kinda chilled out on the pillow then latched right back on. My nipples weren't flattened by him, though there was a little bit of initial latch pain, which subsided in about 5-10 seconds.

The LC said to just work with one side right now, the side that produces more (so he doesn't have to work so hard to get milk). He pretty much drained the left side, I was only able to pump 20cc (usually get 2-2.5oz).

I'm anxious to follow up and see how his weight gain is and see how much he's able to transfer with the weigh-feed-weigh. I feel like we're making progress but I want her to confirm it with the numbers.
