Thanks everyone for your advice! I just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to look like a crazy person for checking in. I sent the HR contact that I've been working with an email this morning and she wrote back that she would be checking my references today so that's good news :). Ugh this process is killing me!

If you didn't send a written thank you note for your first interview, I'd consider sending one for lunch. That way you're touching base without being pushy.

@dookie32: If it were me I would call my references and ask them if they have been contacted as @babyjmama: said maybe HR is waiting on return calls or the background check. I don't think it would hurt to follow up tomorrow or Thursday, as I said just ask about the next step in the process and if they need anything else from you..... after that leave it in their hands, I know waiting sucks but hiring can be a long process at the best of times for all parties involved.

I work in hr so I can tell you the person doing your references might not have gotten return calls. It wouldn't hurt a bit to call hr but maybe also contact your references to let them know (if you haven't already) because that is often what holds the process up. Also depending on their background check process it might take a few business days. But def don't hesitate to follow up, I don't mind one bit...it makes me feel like all the work tracking this stuff down won't be for nothing if the person wasn't actually interested ;)

Good luck!!!

Agree about waiting for a week after your last communication, then reach out to someone (preferably the hiring manager, not HR.....) and just keep it light.. "Just checking in, when might the next stage of the interview process be?" or something along those lines.

personally I would wait a little longer. There is nothing wrong with sending a follow up email but I just prefer to wait

@mrswin: I filled it out within about 10 minutes of getting the email. I haven't heard from any of my references that they've been contacted so that's why I'm also concerned.

@dookie32: I think that it's been almost a week it wouldn't hurt to email someone and say something along the lines of you submitted the application back and just wanted to confirm it was received. And if so, is there an update?

@dookie32: I would fill in the form as requested (maybe you already have....) and then follow up with a phone call to HR. In the call let them know that you filled out the form, whether they need anything else and then ask what the next steps in the process are...

Have they called your references?

Hopefully you get a response from someone in HR... But I think it would be completely acceptable to give HR a call and just ask the status of the position, since nobody has indicated that you are getting an offer.

I need some job search advice. For the past month I’ve been interviewing for a company out in the suburbs (I currently work in the city). I had 2 rounds of interviews where I met everyone I would be working with including the VP and their boss. Last Tuesday, I had a 3rd round lunch interview with the team of people I would be working with, the VP and a few other people. It was a pretty nice restaurant so I think I’m probably the final candidate since I doubt they would spend the money to take multiple people out but I don’t know. There was no talk at lunch about the job really or where we stood in the process and it was too awkward for me to ask about it while we were all leaving.

On Wednesday I received an automated email from HR asking me to fill out an online application for the position- this included reference info, permission for a background check, etc. So I assume that they are doing a background check but there’s been no real communication from the HR contact or anyone else indicating that I’m getting an offer. I’m getting extremely impatient because I just want to know where I stand. I really want this job and it’s really hard to continue with my job search at this point even though I know that’s probably what I should be doing. I know background checks can take a while and I don’t want to be annoying- should I try and contact someone to find out the status or just be patient?
