Watch the ceiling fan! Seriously!

My ped said not to expect much before 4 weeks as far as alert time. We have a couple of crinkly floor mats, he really seems to have "fun" with them.

But really, just savor it as much as you can, before you know it they are trying to run away and throw attitude at you!

Cuddled, talked, read books maybe a bit of tummy time by then. Lots of laying and staring at each other.

I think we talked and cuddled. And did a few min of tummy time. She got really overwhelmed if I stimulated her too much, so it was kept low key.

Less than 4 weeks? You're doing just fine :) you can totally put them in a bouncer and let them watch you do chores or lay outside together on a blanket. Everything is new to them and like @NurseMommy said, it's not a bad thing to just let them look.

You might be bored (hell I was) but just remember that every. single. Thing. Is brand new to your baby. Letting them just sit and look around isn't a bad thing.

I wouldn't worry about it. Talk to LO, make feedings and diaper changes things you're both doing, do tummy time. Other than that I wouldn't stress...as LO gets older it gets more interactive. Hard to believe but within a year your LO could be walking and talking and this will be a worry of the past!

@ScarletBegonia: I used to just sing to her, or try to show her a toy or a picture in a book. But mostly just cuddled and sang to her

Hahahaha! I remember worrying that I wasn't like, doing the right thing in the 10 minutes she was awake and not crying as a newborn. I think we just mostly stared at each other, and I would say weird formal things like - oh hello there. I don't think you can really do the wrong thing when they're not really into anything yet!

Following on from @Babyboecksmom's post about naps, I was wondering what you do/did with your newborns (like, less than 4 weeks) when they are alert and awake during the day? I try to smile, sing, and chat with my boy, but i don't know that its getting through to him and if I was him I'd be pretty bored!! Any advice on things to do with a young baby during awake time?
