I'd be interested to hear about how some of the members that have been on the receiving end of a HB fundraiser feel about it, I bet they'd have some good insight!

I personally don't get involved in crowdfunding, it's not about deserving or not deserving, it's that once you open your wallet, it's hard to turn down the next situation. I would be fine with a separate board to let members decide how they want to manage it. But to force everyone to see stickied posts doesn't sit well with me, unless they're specific board business topics.

I like the separate board idea. I think that they both should be allowed, but the only ones that should be stickies are ones that HB stands behind. To me, stickiness connotes endorsement, so maybe we don't want to get into that. However, I think update threads should be stickies, and perhaps a link to the crowd funding thread could be put in there?

<< there are a lot of active members, and as we know many folks have had hard times. i'm concerned about people feeling pressured to do crowdfunding for their hellobee friends, or hellobee members who experience hardship/tragedy and may wonder or feel hurt if there is no crowdfunding effort for them. >>

@edelweiss: You raise great points! Those are the big reasons why we didn’t allow fundraisers for the first few years… we've only recently eased into them, as our members asked us to consider changing our policy. This is very much an experiment; if it continues to go well, then we'll make it permanent, but if it doesn't, then we will re-evaluate!

<< I'm also curious to know whether all crowdfunding threads will be stickied or if there are certain requirements that have to be met for it to be stickied? This is assuming the policy will allow for crowdfunding (whether it be for HB or national events). >>

@Freckles: The current proposed policy would sticky fundraisers that meet the following criteria:

* The fundraiser is for an active member (with the coordinator of the fundraiser also being active).
* Both members are trusted (this is a qualitative measure, but basically there’s been no history of inconsistencies or deception associated with the users. Bonus points if they’ve met other members in RL who can vouch that we're not all being catfished!)

<< I'm also wondering how you will determine "active" members. Is it people with a certain amount of posts in a certain period? Is it for gold users only? And what if an "active" member is involved in a national tragedy? How do you define "national tragedy"? >>

@MaryM: Great questions - we’ll have to formalize that over time. I do think that national tragedy is pretty straightforward… but active member is trickier. We’d never define it by whether or not someone is Gold; more just based on activity on the site and at meet ups. We were thinking that this could be something we hash out over time… but always open to specific suggestions!

<< Would it maybe be easier to create a category specific to crowdfunding? >>

@MaryM: Ah as in, a separate board so people could block it if they wanted to? That might work, if people were interested in it!

i'm supportive of the crowdfunding that has occurred on this site so far, but i do see some potential very sticky issues in the future.

there are a lot of active members, and as we know many folks have had hard times. i'm concerned about people feeling pressured to do crowdfunding for their hellobee friends, or hellobee members who experience hardship/tragedy and may wonder or feel hurt if there is no crowdfunding effort for them.

i'm not saying we shouldn't have crowdfunding for hellobee members, i'm just throwing out some thoughts to consider.

i think links to fundraisers for national/international tragedies are fine, but i don't see the reason for hellobee members to duplicate other ongoing efforts. it creates a lot of vetting/validity issues, as you mention, and with in/ternational tragedies, there are plenty of other options by which to donate funds.

@mrbee: I'd also maybe suggest stickying this post in order to get proper feedback? Posts with polls often get lost because they don't always have a ton of replies! I think things like discussing HB policies should always be stickied for a little bit so people have a chance to see them.

We started allowing fundraisers for our active members a few months ago, and wanted to follow up on how things have been going. Based on the feedback so far, we've pulled together a crowd funding policy - and we’d love to get your collective feedback.

There are a few different kinds of fundraising campaigns:

1. Campaigns for active Hellobee members
2. Campaigns for national tragedies (e.g. an official fundraiser for victims of the Boston Marathon, or for victims of the shootings at Parliament Hill in Ottawa)
3. Campaigns for friends of members (e.g. if my friend or coworker is sick and has a medical fundraiser)

1. Campaigns for active Hellobee members

In the past few months, we've had a few public crowdfunding campaigns for our members: one for Mr.Badger’s son Lucas, and another for Sandy’s daughter Ava. We also stickied both threads for a day or so, so that people were likely to see them.

Now that we’ve had a few category one fundraisers, we have a much greater comfort level with them - subject to a few guidelines:

* We always feel a lot more comfortable if a trusted community member is coordinating the fundraising. That way, we can be a lot more sure that the money is going to the person in need.
* Both the member and the coordinate should be active members (otherwise it just gets complicated)
* Regular updates from the fundraising coordinator (or the fundraiser designee) are always appreciated! But it doesn’t feel right if someone bumps a thread by mentioning how much money has been raised, and/or requesting that people to donate more money.

We ask that anyone thinking of posting a category one fundraiser post to the help forum first and let us know… we can work with you to get it up asap!

We’re also glad to sticky campaigns for active Hellobee members, just because there is often often updates in the thread that people might be interested in.

Campaigns for national tragedies

Fundraisers for national tragedies are also OK to post, subject to a few guidelines:

* The fundraisers have been vetted as “real” by some sort of credible outside group.
* The fundraisers go to the people affected (not to a cause or issue-based organization)

We haven’t stickied any campaigns of this type, just because it’s hard to vet this stuff and we want to limit the number of campaigns that we sticky. But we're happy to put it up for discussion and a vote (please see poll below).

Campaigns for friends of members

It is impossible to know if these campaigns are real or not, so we just can’t allow them.

We’d love your feedback on the above policy - especially category one and two fundraisers. Please vote in the poll below, and let us know what you think in the comments below!
