Bumping this thread- anyone's LO with allergies have a tomato allergy?

We gave our egg allergic 9 month old lasagna last night- loved it, ate a ton- threw up all over herself and crib at 10:45. Could tomatoes be the culprit? She's typically been fine with pasta....

@Boogs: I have no idea; I don't know enough about the difference to say. I've never been tested because it hasn't seemed like enough of a problem for me - it's only fresh pineapple and the feeling goes away on its own. I spoke to an allergist once when my son was having some mspi issues, and he was unconcerned so I just don't eat much fresh pineapple.

I don't recall having these symptoms as a kid but I can't say for sure. I definitely do find the canned vs fresh vs super ripe fresh to be true though. I always let pineapples sit on my counter for a while before eating, and the ripe stuff doesn't give me a problem.

@gilmoregirl: I've definitely googled and read those things. So, in your particular case, do you have an actual allergy or is it more of a sensitivity? Have you always had the same symptoms or have they ever changed?

So I get a kinda similar reaction to pineapple and I looked into it once because I wondered about an allergy. If I eat it, it sometimes makes my tongue feel funny, like your son says. I'd say for me it's a fuzzy, itchy feeling and almost a little numb.

If you google something like "pineapple and itchy mouth" you can find a lot of info about how the enzyme bromelain causes this reaction and it's more likely with fresh pineapple that's not super ripe. In canned pineapple, the enzyme is broken down and won't cause the reaction.

Maybe worth looking into since you mentioned your son can tolerate pineapple drinks? I wonder if those have the enzyme.

@LulaBee: The dr thought it was odd also, but seriously every single time it was immediate. I tried use the whole wheat because I assumed it was healthier, but after that I said forget it.

@Boogs: I've never heard of a reaction to baby cereal! Maybe they outgrew it?

@Boogs: I think often times pineapples can be pretty acidic, so it's possible that that's just irritating him, since he can have it in drinks (I assume mixed with other things that might bring the whole acidic level down). Still annoying!

@LulaBee: That happened to mine with whole wheat baby cereal, so we stopped giving it and never gave it to DS2. Both seem fine eating things like whole wheat pasta and bread now.

@LulaBee: You won't know how severe the allergy is probably until 12+ months, when they do a blood test, but an allergist will do a skin prick test to at least confirm the allergy. And if your LO can eat baked egg, I would continue to give it to her! It may help her outgrow the allergy altogether.

@Boogs: Definitely weird! If you don't want to go the whole allergy route, you could just avoid pineapple for now. Does he have the same reaction if it's in a drink or baked?

@LulaBee: I'd ask your pediatrician to refer you to an allergist for the egg. They can do a skin prick test to confirm it for you! Both my kids had their allergies confirmed before 9m.

I'm 99% sure my 9 month old has an egg allergy. She vomits every time she has them, and we also avoid banana, mango, kiwi, strawberries.

Pediatrician will do a blood test at 12 months, said anything before that is likely to be inaccurate. She also has what I assume are seasonal allergies- we just started her on Zyrtec.

@MaryM: I've been to the allergist myself a few times and I don't think the testing is that bad either. I've never had the back tests done, only on my arms. I was actually just googling oral allergy syndrome last night after I saw it in the comments of someone's FB when they mentioned an issue with peaches and plums. Thanks so much for your help!

@Adira: When he eats it, he says his tongue feels funny. He's okay eating a piece or two but if he starts having more than that he complains about his tongue and cannot control is spit/drool. He drools worse than a teething baby! Then he starts talking a bit funny. He says his breathing feels fine, but still the tongue thing is weird.

I wouldn't rule out seeing an allergist based solely on shots.

The test itself isn't pleasant (but I think they might do it on the back instead of arms for kids), but an allergist can be a HUGE help and they're more than just shots.

If your kid has "hayfever" like symptoms year round, it could be related things causing outbreaks. Knowing what foods are linked to what triggers (google oral allergy syndrome. I think pineapple and banana are linked to ragweed allergies?) can help minimize symptoms.

Also, the allergist I saw had sublingual drops available. They aren't FDA approved in the US yet, so I had to pay out of pocket, but I would have been charged a copay for each shot so it ended up being cheaper.

I wish my mother had had me tested when I was younger instead of having to suffer with swollen eyes and multiple sinus infections each year until I was in my 20s and got tested myself.

Feeling better makes a few shots totally worth it.

ETA: Just in case it wasn't clear, I haven't been found to have an "allergy" to fruits. I just know from airborne allergy tests that I'm allergic to a lot of things that have links to food that can cause "oral allergy syndrome." That's all I've seen an allergist for.

@Boogs: Skin tests for all. I understand these are not definitive but it was good enough for us. We had friends whose son had a serious egg allergy and they did blood tests for him.

Edited to add: We also had an epi pen that we had gotten from the pediatrician since we had to wait several months for an appointment with the allergist. That made me feel a little better while we waited.

Edited again because I apparently didn't read your question (lol): She did great with the testing and it was really easy. She was 14 months at the time.

Xander (3.5) is allergic to milk. We discovered it when we gave him yogurt (his first dairy product) for the first time at 8m. He immediately started scratching around his mouth and neck, which progressed to coughing, sneezing, and difficulty breathing. He was then accidentally given a dairy-based formula at daycare and broke out in hives all over his body. We were referred to an allergist where they confirmed the allergy.

Logan (21m) is allergic to peanuts and tree nuts. We discovered his peanut allergy when I introduced Bamba (a peanut snack) to him at 7m. He immediately broke out in hives. We were again referred to an allergist where they confirmed the peanut allergy. His tree nut allergy was also just confirmed via a blood test at 21m.

@Aria: My kid has "seasonal" allergies year around. Constant sneezing and runny nose, he has to sleep with a tissue box. So, I wouldn't be surprised if there were other allergies. Last time I talked to his pediatrician she said she would give us a referral to an allergist if we really wanted it, but it would probably result in lots of shots and for us to think about if we wanted to do that with LO. DH wanted to hold off, I'm the one who is more in the camp that it can't hurt.

Our situation was probably a little different but we knew she had MSPI and even after months of being on a very strict diet and not cheating, she was still having issues (blood in diapers). Then when we started introducing solids, she had a couple times where she threw up after eating eggs, and once where she broke out in what seemed to be hives all over her body after eating kiwi. We had to wait until she was a year old but our pediatrician referred us to the allergist and they tested her for allergies to every food that I had been avoiding (dairy, soy, peanuts, treenuts, corn) as well as eggs and kiwi, and I think maybe a few other common allergens.

We were extremely lucky because she came back clear for everything and at that point, we were able to re-introduce all the foods I'd eliminated with no problems. We never really figured out what caused the issues with the hives, but it also never recurred. We did eventually figure out that she had carsickness and that's what made her throw up a few times (oops).

My daughter has a peanut allergy. Her first reaction was very mild, just a little red blotchiness around her mouth. I brought it up to the pediatrician and she completely blew me off. Told me to keep giving her peanut butter. So I did and her next reaction was worse. I took her directly to an allergist after that and got her tested. I say go with your gut. I really regret giving her peanut butter a second time when I knew she had an allergy.

Does your LO have any food allergies? What made you know it was an actual allergy vs a sensitivity? And how do you know when it's something you should ask their doctor about?

LO has what we think is a sensitivity to pineapple. I'm more concerned about it than DH, so I'm curious what other bees have done in a similar situation?
