D1 is allergic to eggs but can have them in baked goods form. She breaks out in hives, and skin is overall very sensitive, she complains often that she's itchy. She's 4 now and is old enough to understand she can't have something because of her allergies and to be aware of eggs.

D2 has no allergies, can eat anything, and we do serve her eggs, as and D1 understands.it might have been harder for D1 if she wasn't able to eat baked goods, so we're thankful for that. But I do overall make meals that we all can eat.

@teamjse: I'm most afraid of the wheat allergy for DS2. It resulted in a trip to the ER, and I know it's going to be difficult to avoid. If I look for gluten free foods, I'm going to run into issues with eggs and dairy. If I find foods that are gluten free and vegan, it's almost guaranteed to have nuts. I can't win. :( Did you find soy a difficult allergy to avoid? Soy is in everything.

DS1 started preschool this year, and I have to make sure to review the snack menu ahead of time. The school is nut free, and they try their best to accommodate. I bring in equivalent items so that he doesn't feel left out, but I can tell that it does affect him. Passing two of his food challenges does put me at ease with baked items. There are some days I wish he could be normal and not have to worry about his allergies.

I only have 1, but he's allergic to soy, eggs, peanuts, wheat, and shellfish. We have eliminated peanuts from our household since that's his worst allergy and his peanut component testing also support that (95% changes of anaphylaxis). Right now, we're having a hard time controlling his wheat allergy since wheat is in A LOT more things than I ever imagined. It's a daily struggle for us and it's extremely hard. We take so many precautions and somethings he'll still breakout in hives. I totally know how you feel. I'm so worried about DS going to preschool next year. The more you learn about your children's allergies, the more you realize that not too many people have empathy for your situation.

@T-Mom: We have gone through two food challenges with LO1, and he is starting to outgrow his allergies. He is able to handle heated milk and eggs in the form of a baked good. The allergist is worried about his peanut allergy, and we won't revisit it until later when his numbers go down (if they go down). Hoping your LO does well with OIT if she is selected.

@PurplePumps: While I cook mostly free of food allergens, DS1 was used to seeing us eat foods at restaurants that he is unable to eat. Once he started learning how to communicate with us, I taught him his allergies. He will always ask if it's okay to eat something in advance and ask if there is cow milk, eggs, or peanuts. Now he watches out for me and his brother and will ask if there is wheat. He is most comfortable with food that I provide for him and overly cautious of food outside.

@yin: It's definitely easier to just make one meals that everyone can eat, heck, we have no LOs and I'm too lazy to cook much as it is. Your kids may be too young to make food decisions now, but just from my experience as a child from what I can remember, I think it was important to have dishes that they cannot eat and stress to them the differences between what they can and can't eat at home. That way when they are outside the home, they know to question food and don't take it for granted that they can eat anything they want based on doing that at home.

@yin: Yeah, we definitely have a peanut free household to accomodate DD. Although I have my secret stash at work... But I really shouldn't. We are actually looking into treatment for peanut allergy right now called Oral Immunotherapy (OIT). My DD is a candidate for a trial at TX Childrens, but not sure if she's going to be selected.

@Andrea: Sorry you have to handle so many allergies too. I can only hope that our LOs will outgrow them soon.

@Arden: Did you and your mom develop your shellfish allergy as a child or later as an adult? Most people I've met with a shellfish allergy developed it later, as late as in their 50s. I have exposed DS2, and luckily he doesn't have any issues.

@T-Mom: That's good that your DS doesn't have any food allergies. Do you have a peanut free household to accommodate your DD? I didn't at first but learned my ways when I figured out how severe my LO's reaction is to peanuts. My DH has oral allergy related to hay fever. It makes it difficult for him to eat a lot of fruits.

@regberadaisy: I hope LO2 is doing well and that cutting out dairy has helped.

@PurplePumps: Thanks for sharing your family experience. I'm contemplating whether I should put the whole family on a diet that is suitable for DS2's allergies. Since I'm still breastfeeding, I have been cooking this way for the past 7 months. I'm usually too lazy to make separate meals, and we mainly eat according to my diet restrictions. Your mom is pretty incredible for being able to handle all of those allergies.

DD1 is allergic to tree nuts and peanuts. She also had an intolerance to dairy that she outgrew by 1 year.

DD2 is allergic to dairy and eggs. We haven't tried tree nuts or peanuts on her yet. We have been advised to wait until she is 2 and to run allergy tests first due to her sister's allergies. Since DD1 is allergic, I wouldn't want to be feeding DD2 tree nuts/peanuts anyway.

I've kept a lot of dairy and eggs away from DD1, too, since it saves me work in cooking different meals for them. Luckily, DD2 only gets a rash/itchiness if she is exposed so I don't worry about her as much as DD1's tree nut/peanut allergy.

I agree, it's a big struggle. Multiple kids with food allergies is no joke. I hate it! Sorry you are dealing with allergies in both kiddos, too. :-(

Wow I'm sorry to hear your second also has food allergies! :-( My DD has peanut allergy but luckily my DS didn't get it. He is sensitive to a bunch of fruits like she is, but the allergist suspects oral allergy syndrome rather than a true allergy. It's hard enough having one with severe allergies, I feel for you...

I don't have kids yet, but I have 3 siblings and we all have different allergies and responses.
I'm the oldest and I'm the lucky one with no allergies at all. I developed a very slight allergy to shellfish in my 20's and the reaction is just a minorly swollen lip. Nothing serious enough to stop me from eating it. (My mom is allergic to crab)
The second one, my brother, is allergic to... wheat, nuts, dairy, soy, egg, seafood. He can basically only eat rice products, chicken, pork, beef, veggies seasoned with only salt and pepper. He has a severe reaction to any of those items including hives or being unable to breathe. He has not grown out of it.
The 3rd and 4th, was allergic to dairy and nuts. The 4th grew out of it and can now pretty much eat anything.
My mom never restricted any food in the house due to my brothers allergies, but just kept it away from him. For dinner, she would cook his first and then add more seasoning for everyone else, or just make his separately. And we were always always told at the beginning of dinner which dishes he could eat and reminded to not mix serving utensils between food he could not eat and food that he could.

DS1 is allergic to diary, eggs, and peanuts. While pregnant with my second I listened to the allergist's recommendation and took Vitamin D3 in hopes of DS2 being free of food allergies. Earlier this week we had a skin prick test done for DS2 and concluded that he is allergic to dairy, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, and wheat. The good news is that I eliminated those foods (plus soy) about 7 months ago. Honestly I thought I was just being overly cautious and never fully expected him to actually be allergic to all of the above. :(

While they share three of the same food allergies, DS2's reactions to his allergies is very different from DS1. DS1 will have itchiness and redness around his mouth with the occasional hives when he comes in contact with his food allergies. DS2 broke out in hives from skin contact with nuts (DH forgot to wash his hands after eating a macaron). We unsuccessfully attempted to give him wheat, which resulted in a visit to the ER due to swelling that would not go down on its own. I'm afraid to expose him to dairy or eggs. I thought having 3 years of experience might prepare me for another child with food allergies, but it has been a struggle.

If your first LO has/had food allergies, did your second (+) child also have food allergies? Same or similar allergies? How do you handle children with different allergies?
