If she can drink a whole bottle of cow's milk or soy formula with no issues, I think it's unlikely that she has FPIES. Techincally, a child can be FPIES to anything, but most FPIES patients can't tolerate dairy or soy. This isn't a scientific study, but here's a link to a spreasheet someone in the FPIES community created with trial success rates by food.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1mnU3HKiFQtZeNbcpc6H5pLRLy5L_WjshKkb34X32S3s/edit?pref=2&pli=1#gid=0

Only 21% of the kids who were logged here could handle formula. The one person in real life who I know whose kid did for sure have FPIES started reacting at a few weeks old to formula and then later to many solid foods. From everything I have read on it, babies who have any formula almost always have their first reaction to the formula, not a solid food.

I am hoping for you too that it's just a gut irritation/immaturity. Your ped sounds great, not too alarmist but still willing to give you a GI referral. I'd also ask the ped/GI if you can start giving her a high-quality probiotic.

So scary! I'm sorry you're dealing with this. :bummed:

My LO had a similar experience with egg yolks at around 7-8mos. She projectile vomited and immediately became very lethargic and sleepy. It was terrifying, because we were in the car & I was watching it all happen while driving down the highway. :-( I tried to feed her them again about a month later, but the same thing happened, so she hasn't had egg yolks since. I feel like since it appeared to just be a sensitivity, not allergy, I'd like to try again sometime, but am reluctant. Fortunately we haven't found any other foods that have affected her this way.

@SunriseMama: I would just nurse her (and she gets a supplemental formula bottle at daycare), but she wants to eat SO BAD. She was so happy last night at dinner when she finally got to eat.

I am hoping it's not FPIES, and that it's just a food sensitivity. We have decided to hold off on solids until next week and I've also called for a GI referral.

We experienced something similar when my daughter was 7 months. On 3 separate occasions, a few hours after she ate dinner, she started violently vomiting. It was terrifying. She's vomit until there was nothing in her stomach, and would get super pale and drained afterwards. She appears to have a fish allergy, but we haven't had her tested yet, and are just holding off on giving her any fish for now. We'll delve into it further when she's a year.

One other thing: it sounds like your daughter is growing beautifully on breastmilk alone, so it might be worth asking your ped if you can just hold off on solids for a bit. According to a nutritionist I talked to and my daughter's allergist, babies don't need solids until they turn one.

@LulaBee: I'm glad your ped isn't immediately jumping to an fpies diagnosis. It's actually very rare, and it caused us huge amounts of stress and extra work in making all our daughter's food from scratch for two years. I should have mentioned in my first reply that my son also had tons of vomitting after eating rice cereal at 7 months, two separate occasions. The difference between his situation and my daughter's is that I just assumed I had overfed him, held off on rice for a couple weeks, and went on with our lives, and everything was fine, whereas I requested an allergist referral with my daughter. I'm no doctor, but I also think that many babies just can't handle grains yet at that age, especially larger portions.

The fact that she's good with cheese is a great sign! As far as dairy and soy in breastmilk, I was told that it's not enough of the proteins to cause a reaction in most fpies babies. They have to eat "enough" of the food to get the typical delayed vomit reaction, at least for the initial exposures. I never removed dairy or soy from my diet, and my daughter never discernably reacted to any foods I ate, including oats. Again though, we never got a confirmed fpies diagnosis.

One thing that helped my sanity was that I would only feed her something we were trialing first thing in the morning right after she woke up. This allowed us to watch her for the 2-3 hours afterwards to make sure she didn't vomit before we put her down for a nap.

@LuLu Mom: She does. Well, not when she nurses AFTER eating solids. But we pulled her off for a few days and she was fine. Since this all started, she's spitting up a bit more and burping more- but ped said could have irritated stomach.

@LuLu Mom: Oh my god. That's so scary. She is not failure to thrive, is healthy at 18 pounds... so I don't think it's that. I'm so glad it resolved in your daughter!

I do think we should probably see a pediatric GI... I just know that what's happening is not normal.

@LulaBee: http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/eosinophilic-esophagitis/basics/definition/con-20035681

It's very rarely diagnosed in someone so young. The "easy" version that was described to me is what asthma is to the lungs, is what EE is to the esophagus, however because of the smaller airway, the risk of swelling is greater. We carried an epi pen with us at all times and avoided any triggers. Eventually by the time she was 13 months she just all of a sudden outgrew it and her allergies and now at 3 1/2 she's living a normal life!

She was failure to thrive, they kept saying she had awful acid reflux (so bad she actually lost weight) she didn't double her birth weight until she was over a year old. It was a very scary time, but I fought for the referral and so glad I'm did! It wasn't easy, she had to go "under" 4 times in 7 months, but we got answers and peace of mind.

@LulaBee: This sounds similar to what my DD1 had, starting around 6 months old she would projectile vomit everything she ate, several times a day. We were referred to a pediatric GI and after running several tests she was diagnosed with EE (which later became EEE because she outgrew it.) We also had an allergist, however we were always told that babies have false positive/negatives so allergy tests are not really reliable at that age. I would be making a log of EVERYTHING your child eats/drinks and then when a reaction happens to see if you can see a pattern. And I would also show your doctor that if it continues and would ask for a referral to a ped GI, they were able to help us so much more.

@Adira: Oh man, that's so scary to have serious food allergies. She doesn't seem to be affected on the rest of her body- no hives, trouble breathing, etc. That's why I was thinking FPIES- it's not a typical food allergy. I think we do need to see someone beyond just pediatrician...

@SunriseMama: I mentioned FPIES to my ped and he didn't really say much about it...

She is pale and out of it after vomiting- but more than half of the times she's done it have been when she's been asleep (usually sleeping on my husband, last night was the first time it happened when she was on her own). There were oats in what she ate for dinner last night....

Ped said it could have been a stomach bug (although none of the rest of the family had it) initially and the rest is lingering stomach irritation- he also mentioned a temporary reflux due to initial vomiting- which is why we are getting Zantac. She's not had bad reactions to eating cheese herself, and I breastfeed and eat dairy and soy- she's never vomited from breastfeeding alone, it's always after she eats solids then breastfeeds.

I'm so sorry you experienced choking on vomit with your daughter- it's terrifying! So she's over 2 now and eats everything but oats? I guess we will introduce something later this week- not sure what to start with. I'm just scared to give her anything....

If she vomits again, I will for sure get a referral to an allergist.

Both my sons had allergic reactions to food at 7-8 months, but it was nothing like what you are describing. My oldest is allergic to milk and had an anaphylaxic reaction immediately after having yogurt. We were referred to an allergist and confirmed the allergy and have been avoiding milk ever since. My youngest is allergic to peanuts (and probably tree nuts - not confirmed yet) and broke out into hives all over his body after being exposed. We were again referred to an allergist and confirmed the allergy and have been avoiding peanuts and tree nuts ever since.

Food allergies tend to affect the whole body - what you are describing with the vomiting seems to be more localized to digestion, which suggests a different situation than a food allergy, at least to me. But I would definitely ask your pediatrician to refer you to an allergist!

I'm so sorry you're going through this! I would ask your ped for a referral to an allergist.

Does your daughter have any other typical allergy symptoms, like hives or difficulty breathing (other than the choking on vomit, which I have been there with my daughter and still think of as one of the most terrifying moments of my life)? If it is just delayed vommiting, you might want to ask your ped/allergist about FPIES. What's her demeanor like after she's done vommiting? Is she pale and out of sorts for awhile?

I would also try to rule out a stomach bug or reflux before you go down the FPIES road. There are no tests for it like there are for ige allergies, so it's all trial and error, and sometimes it can take 6+ introductions for a reaction to show up.

My daughter had delayed vommiting twice after eating oatmeal when she was 7 months old. We never figured out if it was FPIES or not, but the allergist treated her as having it to be on the safe side. We were allowed to introduce her to milk and soy at the age of 2 (has your daughter been good with those? They, along with sweet potato, rice cereal, and oats, are the most common fpies triggers). My daughter did fine with milk and soy and is now eating an almost-normal diet, and we are now only avoiding oats. That's the good news about fpies- it is only seen in children,, and most kids outgrow it by age 3-5.

After the first two vommiting episodes and an allergist doing a skin prick to rule out a true allergy, we stepped way back with solids. Like got rid of everything besides pears and started over with strict trials of 1/2 tsp increments over the space of 12 days. It was exhausting and scary, but we are lucky she never reacted to anything besides oats.

Sorry this is rambling (writing on my phone). I hope your daughter is feeling better today and that you get some answers.

My 7 month old has been throwing up 2-3 hours after eating solids for the last 2 weeks. We took her to pediatrician yesterday, and he said to cut out eggs, mango, banana, strawberries, and kiwi. Well, I somehow FORGOT that bananas were on the list, and gave her a pouch with bananas in it last night at dinner. About 3 hours later, she was asleep in her crib. Something told me to look at the monitor- and she was choking on her vomit. Like, couldn't breathe choking. I ran upstairs and sat her up, got her cleaned up, and she coughed and gagged for about 10 minutes after until she fell asleep on my husband's shoulder... It was one of the most terrifying moments of my life. She's fine this morning, but I'm not.

Has anyone had food allergy/sensitivity issues with babies this young? Have they resolved on their own? I'm worried they will get worse instead of her growing out of them. Ped said we would re-introduce those foods at 9 months... but I honestly don't want to feed her any solids at all, I'm so terrified. We do have a prescription for Zantac that I'm picking up today, to help coat and soothe her stomach for the next few weeks- a short term solution.
