@SugarplumsMom:
1. What's your LO's food allergy?
8.5 DS is allergic to peanut, eggs, soy and wheat

2. What's your favorite easy meal idea?
He still breastfeeds so I've had to look for recipes that don't require the ingredients he is allergic too. My go-to meals are taco salad and GF pasta. He has been eating veggie and fruit purees. I think we are going to try and give him some GF pasta to play with/feed himself.

3. What's your favorite snack or store bought item?
He loves mum-mums (it's cute watching him feed himself).

4. Anything else you want to share
I've never been more aware of ingredients until now. We are constantly checking nutrition labels. We have been eating out less and cooking at home more.

This has also been overwhelming because I'm constantly looking up recipes to help diversify our meals and wonder what my LO will be able to eat when he gets older.

@LuLu Mom: i saw your response on the other thread and didn't want to hijack that thread

@SugarplumsMom: I don't blame you, we tried it after finding out her allergy (scratch test) and the doctor said to go ahead and do it when we were going to be home all day and we had 2 Epi-Pens on hand and she had no reaction. I was super scared that day, but she gets to enjoy her muffins/pancakes/waffles/ect. now.

Allergies are just so scary!

1. What's your LO's food allergy? Soy now, was milk and soy

2. What's your favorite easy meal idea? Meat. He loves meat so we have all sorts of meat and some veggies

3. What's your favorite snack or store bought item? I love the Happy Family foods (puffs, coconut rice melts, sunbutter buddies). Ella's kitchen has a few things that are safe. Plum kids as well, we love the fruit and veggie shreds. Coconut yogurt is a go to for probiotics for us. Freeze dried fruit is something he loves. ENJOY LIFE foods are top 8 allergen free we stock up on the chocolate chips (they have a great allergen free chocolate chip cookie recipe on the back). Sunbutter brand sunbutter is also allergen free.

4. Anything else you want to share
It's a wild ride, but you can do it. We tend to eat paleo or GAPs style foods.

@looch: yes, thank goodness! The hospital gave us a bunch of gluten-free flour and MIL found a different brand I can experiment with. But I'm not much of a baker, so I usually cook with it.

@mrs.cookie: not rambly at all! It's exactly the info that I needed. Pop corn(!) why didn't i thnk of that! I'm trying the big batches today and hopefully, it'll make life easier!

One other recipe I like to share is banana pancakes. I only add water, banana, vanilla extract and glutin-free flour, blended until smooth. My flour mix has rice in it and it's already a little sweet. I notice it worked best on a completely dry pan (no oil). It gets puffy like real pancakes that way. With oil, they get clear and doughy.

Another easy recipe: grated potato with gluten-free flour and protein of choice. I pretty much pancake everything to make it toddler friendly.

@LuLu Mom: thank you for that! I looked it up and it seems that 56% of kids allergic to eggs can tolerate it baked at 350 for more than 30 mins. That sounds so promising, but I'm scared to try since her allergy was pretty strong.

Here's the link, in case anyone else is interested:

1. LO is allergic to eggs, nuts, and reacts to certain dairy
2. LO loves anything tomato based, so we do spaghetti with whole wheat noodles, lasgana (Annie's has a good one that's quick if you don't do homemade), she loves pork so I"ll do a garlic, brown sugar, or smoothered.
3. She's huge into the Gerber "cheetos" in any flavor. I love the smell of the cinnamon maple ones, she will munch on those on teh way to daycare as a "pre-breakfast" snack.
4. My daugther's pediatric allergist told us that once an egg is baked at 350 degrees for 20+ minutes it is no longer considered an "egg." So we have been able to give her stuff wtih eggs with no reaction as long as it is baked! I'm not a doctor, but you might check with yours to see if this is your LOs case too. This has mad life easier with her egg allergy and she can enjoy more items.

@locavore_mama: thank you! We are not gluten free (yet) but its easy to de gluten recipes - I often use coconut flour instead!

@looch: definitely agree, vegan recipes are really good.

Happyhealthymama.com did a great post showing what her MSPI toddler ate in a day - there was egg and gluten but might yield some ideas too.

Re variety, the thing that I do that works best for us is to make a bunch of finger foods, baked goods, every few days, then I can offer lots of variety at meals or change it up easily. Preparation really is the key to catering for allergies in my opinion... Though of course there are lots of days I'm not prepared at all!

Have you looked for any vegan meal ideas? That should help you with the egg allergy, but what's stumping me is the gluten. Can you find gluten free baking mixes? In the US, there is a gluten free equivalent of Bisquick that can open you up to a world of muffins.

@locavore_mama: ooh yep I'd love that recipe! I'm like a recipe hoarder :)
Asian food is THE BEST when it comes to a dairy/egg allergy. I make onirigi and sushi rolls quite often for my two. We just use a non soy soy sauce! :)

@SugarplumsMom: @mrs.cookie: egg is such a hard allergy!!! My nephew has a severe egg allergy and it's pretty much the pits. He really likes these white buns from the Asian mart that has no eggs.
Also when they were visiting we made cupcakes and I found a Eggless recipe that was really quite good. I can share if you'll like. Don't remember how old your LOs are but I was thinking birthday cake! :)
He also loves Italian food!!! Pasta is one of his faves.

@SugarplumsMom:
1. 13 mo DD is allergic to nuts, milk, soy, eggs, tomatoes, red peppers, strawbs. 3.5 yo DS is allergic to milk, soy, tomatoes, peppers, strawberries.

2. Current faves are: grilled corn on the cob, dairy free risotto, dairy free beef stroganoff with fettuccine, quinoa and roast vegetables, crumbed chicken. DD loves food pouches because she can control it herself so we do give those a lot. Today the kids devoured toasted flatbread with roast sweet potato and avocado inside - easy for little hands.

3. Snacks: happy baby puffs, happy baby creamies, rice crackers, snap dried apple pieces, coconut yoghurt. Homemade bread, homemade banana bread, homemade vegan muffins, homemade vegan icecream, homemade pike lets.

My DS loves fruit, homemade muesli bars (with egg but you could use flax eggs) popcorn, rolls of ham. He doesn't eat veggies much but we are getting there. I make vegan muffins with zucchini etc a lot in pretty cases and call them cakes. Take that, picky boy!

They both love green smoothies too - I make up rice milk, kale, banana, rolled oats. Blueberries and chia - quick and filling breakfast or snack. Gets a bucketload of nutrients into them.

4. It's tough!! I have weeks where I feel on top of her diet and weeks where I'm scrabbling as to what on earth to feed her! I have to order all the happy baby or plum baby stuff from the States too so I have to be organised!

I do often feel like all I'm giving her is fruit and veggies!! Lucky she quite likes them. I've found a few good websites I use a lot for ideas and recipes. Vegan recipes are usually my go to as that gets rid of the dairy and egg, though they often have soy and nuts. I put a lot of chia seeds in everything to get extra protein, healthy fats and omega 3s into the kids.

We've also gotten to the point where we can't eat things in front of her she can't have. My son was eating scrambled eggs last night and she threw herself on the ground for a tantrum :( *Luckily* most of their allergies overlap so that makes cooking a bit easier...

Our ped advised last week to try cutting gluten as well but I've been putting it off, I'm already struggling as it is. I think it's helping P that she's now drinking a couple of bottles of Elecare a day, as it gives her a full compliment of nutrients incl fat (my breast milk is a tad "lean" and she wasnt gaining weight) so she's a bit more settled now. Coconut yoghurt or icecream is another good source of fats and actually contains a fat/protein? that is otherwise only really found in breast milk! You can make your own yoghurt but I buy it, I do make my own icecream. I also make a vegan chocolate avocado mouse that's to die for.

Bit rambly sorry, typing on my phone whilst DS is busy with playdoh :)

Ps: I'm going to make that penne with a few modifications :)

1. DD's allergic to eggs, gluten, milk.

2. Her newest fave dish is gluten-free penne with chopped sun-dried tomatoes with olive oil.

3. Organic puffed rice crackers (Styrofoam disks), dried apricots, raisins and gluten-free bread.

4. I'd really love to hear about ideas on what others feed their toddlers with allergies. DD needs some variety and although it's great that she loves fresh fruits and veggies, it'd be nice to serve her other things. She has it for snacks and with every meal. We need variety!
