It is possible her kid reacts to those things...

Hm. I just try to feed her healthy balanced food, I guess I try not to let her have too much sugar, but that's about it! Kid gets hyper off a cutie!

Sounds extreme to me since she's doing this as a preventative measure. But I'm not super strict with food - everything in moderation!

No added sweeteners whatsoever--even "natural" stuff like honey or maple syrup. But that's because LO has horrible teeth. Nothing specifically for behaviour, though maybe we limit gluten as it tends to get her constipated, which then makes her cranky? Also she's pretty mild-mannered for a toddler, maybe it has a little bit to do with no sugar crashes?

So yeah, all conjecture lol. Never seen any study on this.

Well, I started eating clean/Paleo right before we started solids because I wanted to set an example and feel good about all the foods I have offer her but I dont care what she eats at my parents or if we go out to eat or holidays filled with candy (at her age, it's just one day). I feel lIke that mom has great intentions but is making things harder on herself!

Yikes. Well, that should set her LO for a real healthy relationship with food :bummed:

There are a lot of nutritional benefits to those foods she's cutting out completely, I hope she's making up for those deficiencies in some way.

I think it sounds like woo science, if we're being honest. Like @blackbird:, Id have to see some legit research before I believe a lot of the stuff people preach nowadays.

Moderation, ftw.

I heard about food dyes affecting behavior recently. I'd def give it a shot if I needed to address behavioral issues.

@Anagram: I cant remember to be honest it was about 4 yrs ago - I just remembering finding food dyes in everything!

Apparently we eat lots of processed food!

Oh geez. That is intense. I would need to see some LEGIT studies before I get on board with a lot of the correlations being drawn by people. I'm an everything in moderation person. I want my children to learn that. I think it's an incredibly important food habit to learn.

@Mamaof2: Just curious--what were the foods that were hard to avoid with food dyes? I found this small list as a sample, and the only one that surprises me on this list is Life cereal and the piclkles--how bizarre! The rest of the stuff, my LO already can't eat because they have dairy/soy products.

@autumnlove: yikes--that's a pretty restrictive diet for a kiddo with no allergies/intolerances. The only thing I've heard of is that red dye that's been linked to hyperactivity. I do have friends that try to avoid that. I would also try to avoid, or allow only very occasionally. Right now, my LO is too young to eat most of the process foods/sweets that it's most commonly found, though.

no but I did try keeping food dye out of DS's diet for awhile to see if it would help with behavior - but it was REALLY hard to do so I stopped

Do you try to keep certain foods out of your LO's diet because you think it will adversely affect their behavior or learning potential? Or do you allow all types of food in moderation?

A new kid (I think 16 months) started in LO 2's room yesterday and his mom has him on a strict diet free of gluten, dairy, soy, corn and refined sugars. She told me he has no known allergies or intolerances and no behavior red flags but she wants to prevent him from developing learning disabilities and aggression issues in the future.

Right now we allow everything in moderation. If any serious behavior issues ever come up, I think I would try adjusting diet if our Dr thinks it is a good idea!
