I have a hard time budgeting "fun" money. So, as painful as it sounds, we would budget your "fun" categories into separate sections (i.e. clothing, toys, drinks/bars, entertainment) each month. Then we have $10 a week ($5 each unless we decided to put it together) "do anything" money and that's our only area that is up in the air.

As far as the food budget. We probably buy too much organic, free-range, "clean" stuff but we meal plan to try to keep costs down. We spend anywhere from $90-$130 a week for the two of us. (Adults, no kids). We also eat out about once a week and that is not in our grocery budget. We budget about $30 for eating out each week.

We spend about $125/week on groceries, but we also eat out a lot, so your budget could be doable. As far as the "fun" budget, you don't need a lot of toys for your LO (they play w/ the boxes more anyway, right?), and I try to limit my clothes budget to no more than $35/mo, which is enough to get me at least one new shirt (I'll save up for several months if I want something bigger).

Our food + fun budget is about 200$/ week. We usually spend 80-90$ on groceries (we don't eat organic, so your budget is probably right on for y'all!) and then the leftover, usually around 100$, is our 'fun' money. It's usually enough for a dinner and a lunch out, plus whatever we need for us or the house that week. When LO get's here we are bumping the fun budget down to 80$ and adding in a separate 'miscellaneous baby' budget of about 75$ a month for diapers, toys, etc.

Do you have any data from past months that you are working with?

If you are normally at 125/wk than it's do-able. :)

If you don't have any past data... I highly suggest you start tracking your spending and see where you naturallly budget your money. It was a real eye opener for us when we did that.

Good Luck!

I get $40 a month and DH gets $80 (his includes booze and he works many nights). We also allocate $50/month for LO; some months we might not buy anything for her and some months more.

This is our first month and so far the $ has been reasonable and very do-able.

I think $125/week sounds low, especially if that includes eating out. We easily spend $50+ at just an average meal out on the weekend, which would mean groceries need to come in under $75. With organic produce and meat, that would be even more difficult. At least with grocery prices around here.

Working through our budget and trying to find some ways to cut back on our spending... I think our food and "fun" money allocations are prob the only places we can cut.

For our family of 3, I'm thinking $500/month or $125/wk on food ? We try to eat organically as possible and only eat out like once a week or so. Do you think that's a reasonable amount?

I'm having a harder time with "fun" money. This includes things like clothes, toys for LO, movie, hair cut, etc. What do you think is a reasonable amount per month?
