She really didn't start eating much until 12 months, before that it did okay with purée's but only ate maybe a pouch of baby food a day.

@littlefox, @mamimami, @lemondrop: glad to hear you ladies have had similar experiences. Thanks!

@blackbird: Good point! DS is really enjoying transferring objects between hands, so playing with foods like that is a good idea.

@yellowbird: Thanks for sharing. My pedi is old-school (recommended solids at 4 months), so that's another reason I'm self-conscious about it.

@lizzywiz: I went back to work a month ago and started stressing about this then. I have enough stress as it is and don't want my anxiety to affect DS's relationship with food. Making it fun sounds like the way to go!

@pastemoo: Glad to hear you're a good eater!

@bao: We have tried pieces of food. He doesn't like eating them, but does like playing with it, so maybe that's enough now.

@kemma: It's gonna be awhile before DS realizes solids can give him any satiety. Right now he just gets this expression that says, "what are you trying to pull, mom, this is NOT breast milk!" Definitely just a developmental thing for him now.

I second @blackbird: Let 'em experience it and don't worry.
Mine is 16 1/2 months and we went with food is fun approach. It was SO much less stressful on everyone and she is a good eater, now.
On a side note, I am a WOHM and I found myself getting anxious every dinner time because I was worried about what I SHOULD feed her and what she was eating (or not) and how long it was all taking in our time crunched evening. I was bending over backward, rushing between purees and baby-led weaning type foods and I was a mess. I realized my anxiety was not helping, took the 'fun' approach and finally things clicked into place.

My thoughts are also kemma's-picking up food, touching it, playing with it, dropping it, etc helps them grow and learn in ways that toys don't. we've been going LO sticks of food to play with and in the same week, she managed to get a broccoli to her mouth, is also the same week she can get her paci back in on her own. It's definitely helping hand eye coordination. But as far as nutrition goes? Not sure it's a big deal and especially not if enough milk is being drunk

We tried random stuff (some purees, some small food pieces) since 6 months, but he didn't really take off eating until 10 months.

We were pretty much forced into baby-led solids. My child just had no interest in solids especially purees! We would just leave some bits of food on her tray and eventually she started eating it. At 11 months now she is doing pretty well. Sometimes she eats close to nothing but at other times she's like a starving jackal.

My LO is almost 9 months and has just started actually eating a little bit in the past week. He still gets mostly breast milk and mostly plays with food, though. As long as your LO is healthy and happy, I think you're fine.

I think you are fine especially if he's just sitting up. I agree with maybe thinking about skipping purées if it's a texture thing and giving small pieces instead like baby lead weaning.

From what I understand solids are more important from a developmental standpoint as opposed to there nutritional value in the first twelve months. It also takes time for babies to work out that solid food gives them the same feeling of satiety as milk.

Could you try some finger foods? My LO won't eat savoury food off a spoon (baby food in particular) but does enjoy desert foods (yoghurt, fruit, custard etc) from a spoon and LOVES table food.

@Katrocap: I have friends who waited to introduce solids until 12 months. My mom introduced solids to me at 10 months and I will eat ANYTHING for the most part.
I introduced solids to my son at 4 months. Around 9-10 months he actually started EATING them.
Basically all the nutrition comes from the milk/formula at that point.

@Katrocap: Have you tried small pieces of food soft but not mashed up? Texture is huge for babies...but really, I wouldn't worry too much a lot of babies are not a fan of foods at first.

So I've read here and other places that, "food before one is just for fun". How true is that? My 8.5 month old DS has no interest in solids. We've been trying since 6 months (irregularly, I admit) with pureed/mashed up fruits and veggies and he just grimaces and looks like he's being tortured. I'm concerned that he isn't eating solids yet. He only started sitting up this week, and I've read that sitting up is important for eating solids, so I'm hoping that has played a factor. Has anyone else experienced a late solids eater?
