@enjollah: Yup, she's breastfed. I don't usually pump and dump. Your breast milk will have roughly the same concentration of alcohol as your blood. So it's quite a bit different than when you're pregnant and LO is sharing your blood supply. If I have a glass I'll nurse her before I have a glass so she won't be hungry again for a few hours or wait until after she goes to bed. Pumping doesn't make the alcohol leave your breast milk, only time does that, pumping is just so you don't become engorged if you miss a feeding due to drinking. While I like a glass on some evenings I don't usually have more than that so I haven't worried much about pumping and dumping. On the occasion that I have I just have a bottle on hand and she gets her next feeding from there (and I just deal with having big boobs for a bit instead of pumping), even then though I've kept it to always being sober enough to drive.

I eat everything - spicy, milky, nutty, etc. and luckily no problems. We do eat healthy but that's what we've always done. I still have a morning coffee, which I had cut out during pregnancy and a glass of wine on some evenings after baby goes to bed.

Interesting! I totally restricted my diet during BFing. I avoided all of the foods that I avoided during pregnancy. Augh. At least I know for next time!

I think you are also supposed to limit high-mercury fish. But most of the stuff that's off limits in pregnancy is okay.

I've heard from other BF moms that caffeine and alcohol are the two things to avoid.

I was told that I could eat ANYTHING I wanted. I was told that I might consider cutting back on caffeine but other than that, it was all good.

This might be a stupid question but....can you eat pretty much anything when breastfeeding? I know you should continue with healthy choices but can you eat the foods you are suppose to avoid during pregnancy (ie: hotdogs, deli meats, sushi, etc)?
