My son had the worst reflux with dairy and once I cut that out, it was like he was a totally different baby - much less crying, never spit up, it was awesome. I can't believe it took me 3 months to figure it out. I added dairy back to my diet around 8-9 months, and he did fine with it.

He also struggled when I had citrus so I cut that as well.

I wanted to update. M had green poop for 3 weeks. I ended up cutting soy (no change), and then gluten. After cutting gluten, her poop returned to yellow, but it seemed mucousy still.

In the last week, I've introduced gluten again, and everything is totally normal.

The only thing I haven't been using is my goats rue supplement, which contains lecithin. After Googling, apparently lecithin can cause green poop. So, who knows!!! Thankful I don't have to restrict my diet even more.

@KayKay: Thank you for sharing!!! Google tells me green poop (form more than a couple days) isn't normal, but it sounds like many babies do have green poop!!

@Kemma: I'm working with my IBCLC and our doc. The green isn't their concern (while crazy looking, apparently it can be normal), but the mucous is concerning. Since she's gaining weight and seems happy (also no other symtoms), they don't act too alarmed. More just little things (like doing 1 Food elimination at a time and doing probiotics). The low supply just sucks becasue it's hard to get solid answers.

My DS had green poop from 2m-4m before I cut anything strictly (started just dairy and that seemed to do the trick so didn't do anything else) after seeing a teeny amount of blood. He was always happy, growing well, and sleeping well, so our pediatrician (and my friends who are pediatricians) said to not worry about it. Once I saw the blood and cut dairy, I didn't see blood again and his spit-up was reduced, but his poop stayed green (and somewhat less mucousy, but didn't do a direct comparison or anything!). Then he started solids and now it's just poop-colored ;)

I still avoid most obvious dairy for him at 9m, although I'm slowly giving smaller amounts of cheese/yogurt. And I try to only eat one dairy thing a day at most. I'm beginning to worry less and less about it, though, as I have not seen any blood in his stool in months, and he's still happy & growing.

@littlejoy: are you working with an IBCLC or your paediatrician to work through your feeding / digestive issues? Call me cautious but green poop isn't always an issue on its own and I'd hate to see you having an even more limited diet!

@skipra: We stopped using the dairy donor milk about 3 weeks ago (as soon as we saw the reaction - she had a little blood in her stool). Our current donor milk is vegan, but not free of the other allergens. I'm thinking the formula plan is a good plan.

I never saw improvement after eliminating gluten, soy, eggs, nuts...we could never figure out the cause and eventually he grew out of it.

Personally, I would switch from donor milk to a safe formula and see what happens. If after 2 weeks you don't see any change try cutting soy. With all 3 of my kids dairy was the worst but I did also have to eliminate soy. One of them also reacted to gluten for a while. With soy and gluten though it was short term immediate reaction and cleared the system very quickly. Dairy we would deal with a weeklong reaction. My guess is that once the dairy from the donor milk works its way through your LO's system you'll have a much easier time figuring out if there are any other sensitivities. Good luck and hope she is feeling better soon!

@Mrs. Microscope: Not adding eggs makes sense. I'm just hopeful I'll open her diaper to normal poop soon.

My LO was milk, soy, peanut, and gluten intollerent and egg allergic. I saw improvement after about a week. I wouldn't add eggs in yet. I lived off of rice, beans, and nuts. Good luck!

As I mentioned on fb, our pediatrician said corn and eggs are the next most allergenic foods in bm after the dairy and soy, before gluten. So maybe try eliminating corn (since you are egg free already) before gluten. I would figure out what is causing the issue before adding in eggs to your diet. Hugs, and good luck!

LO has some food issues we are working through.

She's 5 weeks old, and has had green poop for 3 weeks. I have a low supply, which makes food elimination hard (becasue my donor milk isn't allergen free). We've decided I will cut out allergens (1 at a time) until we figure it out, and supplement her with formula to cut out the potential reaction with donor milk.

With that said, I'm vegan (so, an already limited diet), and thinking about being gluten free + soy free seems daunting. I'm considering adding eggs into my diet, but I also wonder if that could cause more confusion when narrowing down her issues.

If your baby had dairy/soy/gluten intolerance, did they also have other sensitivities?

How long did it take you to narrow down the cause?

How long before they seemed normal again?

In our case LO is growing and seems happy. She just has green poop with mucous.
