We only did special meals for the kids as infants. But as soon as they were good to go chewing and all that, they got what we got. We’ll put spices or sauces on the side or do deconstructucted tacos or whatever, but I have a hard enough time only cooking for me and the kids much less two separate meals for me plus them (I solo parent 1/3 if the nights of the month, if not more.)

DS is 3 and still doesn’t really like meat in ‘natural form’. One thing that works is to give him something to dip chunks in like bbq sauce or ketchup. Same with veggies that are raw. I also find he likes things with more flavour than I thought so I don’t make things less spiced for him anymore. At 18 months I just gave him what we had and it would be 50/50 that he would eat it. I would offer him a pouch or pb crackers as an alternative but he always initially got the same meal as us in a deconstructed way. At 3, he doesn’t get any second option as he understands what we are having is all there is. He will also try at least a bite 90% of the time and I just keep offering the regular stuff we have, trusting that if he doesn’t eat he probably isn’t hungry.

Thank you all! I don’t think I can quite label her as a picky eater but more if a texture sensitive eater 😂
She goes for a well check soon so I’ll get the Pediatrician’s input, too!
I’m definitely not a picky eater myself! I’m thankful she loves fruits and veggies but it would be nice if she’d eat baked chicken and turkey just to give her variety! Until then, I’ll just keep offering her new things!
I really appreciate your feedback!

We feed our 16 month old whatever we eat plus we have older kids so we also always serve a kid friendly staple too. If we're having salad or soup I will separate it out so it's easier for him to eat. Like no big chunks of raw carrot but cut up tomatoes are ok. We are taking advantage of his willingness to try anything at this age because we know from experience he is only going to get pickier. One food that surprised us that he really likes is shrimp curry!

@Pollywog: both my kids would eat a bar and yogurt every single meal if I let them!

@Stardust17: my older daughter is still the same way with meat- she’s 4 now and just doesn’t like most of it. She’s also gotten pretty picky in general (which I think is normal for a 4 year old). Have you tried things like chicken sausage? I get them at Trader Joe’s usually, sometimes we do it in a bun or sometimes cut up into pasta or something. She used to like shredded slow cooker chicken with bbq sauce a lot too.

We usually eat after the kids go to bed too. I know it’s bwtter for them to eat the same thing as me all together, but dinner is one of the only times DH and I have to sit and talk. It’s annoying all around but we do what we can.

Our 15 month old loves hamburger, the entire thing, bun and all. We also feed him penne with tomato sauce recently and i was surprised how well he did with it.

I fed mine whatever I was eating. If he doesn't eat it, he can raid his snack drawer. I don't make separate meals for him, but if he doesn't like what I have he can have a PBJ bar and yogurt. For awhile I'd give him a pouch with our dinner to help with the transition.

@Mrs. Champagne: I eat a lot of salads when my husband travels during the week. When I cook on the weekends, we usually eat after she’s in bed (she goes to bed around 645). She’s growing fine but I was just curious if I should push “our food” more and to what extent? Like if she refuses to eat it, do I give her something else I know she will? Or just offer her a mixture of our meal and things I know she likes? Or be tough and if she doesn’t eat what we are having, she has to “go hungry”??? I feel at her age that’s a little harsh but maybe not? FTM 🤦🏼‍♀️😂

Everything we eat!

Sometimes just separated - like if I make homemade soup she's pretty messy so I'll strain the liquid out and just give her the chunks.

Tonight we had chicken cooked in a slow cooker with peppers and onion and salsa, put into wraps. I just cut her wrap up a bit and put some cheese on the side. She's a good little eater!

Our 18 mo old will eat almost any veggie and fruit but the only meats she will do is breaded chicken (organic nuggets), turkey meatballs, some fish (organic fish sticks or fish fillets that are breaded) corndog nuggets (made of chicken) Mac and cheese, veggie pasta, turkey sausage, plain ground beef, pb and j and grilled cheese. She doesn’t really do mixed foods (casseroles and such) and doesn’t like tomato sauces. Breakfast foods are pretty easy. I don’t cook a lot during the week unless my husband is home and we eat more “grown up” foods (things with more spice like chili, tortilla soup, sweet and sour chicken, casseroles, etc) Should I just try to introduce those things and at least have her try it? If she asks for something I’m eating, I’ll let her try it. But she won’t eat deli meat, regular hot dogs, regular chicken or turkey (like grilled or baked chicken or roasted turkey). We don’t eat pork by choice. I’d love any advice.
I’m not concerned about anything really just more curious.
