Thanks for the input, ladies!

@Mauri - I didn't realize Starbucks have changing tables! The things you don't notice when you don't have kids!

@lamariniere - good idea re: hotel bathrooms! that's my go-to when i'm out & need to use the bathroom myself :)

I've def changed LO in her stroller when I've had it, but at some point I'll need to venture into Manhattan from Queens in the subway with just a carrier (like the Baby K'Tan).

I think the floor is the likely candidate for when there isn't an appropriate place to change LO.

I bought disposable pads, so perhaps I can put that under the changing pad since public bathroom floors scare me! It's fairly big so hopefully she won't be all touching the floor while she squirms (yuk!)

LO is young yet for changing standing up - we need to work on her holding her own head up first! ;)

I change her in the stroller. I absolutely wouldn't do a bathroom floor cause she flips and touches everything, and I can't wrangle her legs, bum AND keep her hands out of her mouth haha.

I'd also try to find a changing room if possible

I think the hotel idea is great, usually there are bathrooms in the reception floors!

I am a huge advocate of learning how to change while the babe is standing up, it's actually not that complicated, even when they're not standing on their own.

I haven't had to change my son in public yet (he's only a month old) but I've noticed that the Starbucks in NYC all have changing stations. That will probably be my go to spot. I would not feel comfy using tables/booths in restaurants.

I've done the stroller thing, mall bench, on my lap. You find a way to make it work.

I've done the bathroom floor countless times, but some are too gross, even with a pad underneath. When we lived in NYC, my main places were Barnes and Noble, Whole Foods, babies r us/buy buy baby, some of the baby gaps have restrooms, department stores, park benches when it was warm enough. You could probably slip into a hotel too. They might not have changing stations, but the floor would be cleaner than a restaurant floor.

We changed in the stroller a few times too when we were sure it wasn't poo.

I think it's okay to do it in a booth/on a bench type chair in an eating establishment, but I wouldn't do it on the table. I did it in the food court at the mall the other day (in a booth) and couldn't decide if the people I was with were judging me or not! Dressing room sounds like a good idea.

I second the bathroom floor- as bad as it is to kneel on the floor, as baby gets bigger there's no way you'll be able to change them on your lap. Might as well get used to it from the start.

Definitely not in a restaurant on a chair. I try to look for a Macy's, or large department store....or fast food / chain restaurant that is likely to have a changing table. Otherwise a dressing room works too. Worse case in a bathroom but luckily I've always found a changing table after a few tries...

I've done it on bathroom floors (on top of the changing pad) and in top of the toilet lid. You do what you gotta do!

Eta I wouldn't change lo in a restaurant chair, I personally think that's gross if people are eating right there...

FTM here - so question, where do you change your LO if you're out and about with just a carrier & a diaper bag?

If there's no park bench in sight, no patch of grass, there's no Koala care thingie in the bathroom (and no sink to perch your baby on)?

What about in a restaurant - is it gross to change your LO on a chair in the dining area?

And what do you do when it's cold outside?

Someone advised that I memorize the nearest Babies/Toys R Us and Barnes and Nobles, but there will be times when I'm pounding the pavement and no child-friendly bathroom in sight.

For now, I'm thinking I find a bathroom, sit on a toilet, unfold a changing pad on my lap & change that way.

Thoughts?
