My Shih Tzu used to go to the groomers all the time, but I started doing it myself when I got married and moved away. Now she goes a couple of times a year when I go home to my parents (the lady we use has her own business out of her house and only costs $40) to get a really good clipping and I maintain between them. I am getting a lot better and quicker about it, and she is such a mess any ways it is hard to see the little imperfections. I shave her super close year round since we live in Texas.

Our Labrador sheds all the time and while he does not need traditional grooming, we do take him once or twice a year to have a Furminator treatment. Not that it does much good, but it does help to cut down on the shedding for a few days :). I wish there was something magic that we could do to help him shed less... It's pretty hopeless, though!

We do dog washes ourselves and take them to the groomers when they are really hairy or we don't have the time.

When my Cockachon was really young I tried doing it all myself and she looked like a mess! So I take her to the groomer every 6 weeks. I know she hates going because she will try everything to avoid going. It's worth it though, because my groomer knows how to mold my mixed breed into something that looks like a Cocker Spaniel!

I have a 11.5-year-old Maltese (who still acts like she's 5) and used to take her to get groomed every other month at the groomers. Then one day I got tired of paying more for her grooming than my haircuts and bought some clippers and that was when she was about 3-years-old. I've had to buy better clippers since and I've gotten compliments on her cut many times. I use the shortest clipper size and just chop her down every other month. She's not super pretty the first week or so and then as her fur starts to grow in she starts to look cuter and cuter until she needs another hair cut. By then she usually looks like a mop! Haha!

We bathe them and cut their nails at home. My chihuahua would be traumatized if I took her somewhere to get groomed. She is a little anxious around strangers. She's leapt out of people's arms to get back to me before.

I have two dogs, Greta is a labordoodle type dog (humane society mystery breed!), and we do bathe her at home but bring her to PetSmart to get haircuts, nails clipped, and teeth brushed. We usually wait until she's gotten pretty fluffy and then have them shave her down.

Harvey is a cockapoo type dog (another mystery breed from the humane society!). We can bathe him at home, but he won't tolerate groomers. He SCREAMS in terror and bites and won't stay still so we have to bring him to the vet to be put under and then they'll do his nails, his ears, teeth shave him down (he's non-shedding and can get matted so it's easier just to shave him down) and express his glands. We try to do it as infrequently as possible because it's scary to have to put him under. We think he may have been abused or had a bad experience prior to us getting him. He's getting better, but not to the point where we can find anyone willing to groom him. It ends up costing us something like $300 each time we need to take him : (

I have a sheltie, and while we can bathe him easily enough, I don't do his nails or trim him. We also go to petsmart and pay te same as you, @mrsjyw! They should charge based on size - my dogs 50 lbs! I love it there though - and so does the dog thankfully! He has an appt a week from today, woohoo! :D

Just took my lab to Petco yesterday for a grooming. Man is it expensive though. We've also taken her to one of those DIY grooming places where they have all the supplies and you wash your dog yourself.

I have an Aussie that needs it, not too often though which is nice. But to help prevent matting when it gets too long, and just to stay cleaner we do. We take her in. I think I would mess it up if I tried myself.

I bath her at home 2-3 times a month, but for cuts and nail trimming we take her to the groomer. About every 8 weeks or so, she usually looks pretty shaggy by the end but we are cheap. ;) Summer we shave her so it takes longer to grow out, winter we keep it a little longer. I will trim around her eyes if it needs it, but she's a rambunctious thing so it's difficult to even do that!

I have a Siberian Husky, read: fluff ball and DH gives her baths every couple of weeks and we cut her nails when they need it. We're going to take her like 1 or 2x a year for a full blown cleaning/grooming though, but she gets very well loved and cleaned at home- fo' free haha

DIY!

I said I wasn't going to do our guy while I was preggo, but I still seem to be doing him! He's been to the groomer's twice. Once before our wedding, and he did go in April to get a post-winter clean up, mostly for the blow dry!

He is a Golden Retriever, so he definitely needs a fair amount of grooming, but it's part of having a dog, and I have loved learning to trim him and make him look pretty good!

Do you take them to a place? Or do you DIY?

We have a beagle terrier and yorkie. Bathing wise, I wash them at home at least 2x a month and cut their nails.

The yorkie I used to take to the groomer's all the time, but then tried to do it at home on a whim, so during the winter for short trims, I'll do it myself.

During the warmer months, I take him in to get shaved down. Taking him in right now!! :P

What about you?
