@Jenn23 -- love your story!! I totally know how you felt. Sometimes I feel like we are never going to get there. I always feel boosted when others felt the same way but now have little ones to show for it. Means there is definitely reason to have hope. Thanks for your support. xoxo

@mopeybuthopey: Yep, that's my little IVF baby! We had no choice but IVF (only have one tube left and it is blocked) and I was also told I had DOR at the time and I wasn't optimistic. After two years of crazy procedures and surgeries I had all but given up hope. It was the most depressing time of my life for sure!!! But it worked for us!!! I actually didn't believe it until the day my son was born. It was so surreal for me. I just thought I was not meant to have a baby since everything had gone wrong for so long. So I KNOW what it feels like. It totally sucks and is so unfair!! But just know you have good odds with IVF and try to be positive and I wish you all the best. ((Hugs)) :)

@jenn23: remind me, have you already undergone IVF? Your little one in your profile pic is adorable. What a sweetie. You are right that it really boosts our odds. I would do anything for a kiddo. Seriously, like so many others on here, the days on which I get my period are the saddest, saddest days :( We do not have any insurance coverage re: fertility treatment, but my husband is an employee of the hospital, so we get a discount. Brings it to around $8500-10,000 depending on what's needed per cycle (fresh), which is better than $15,000+ per cycle. But it is a lot of money.

Haha, no worries on the thread jack. This was an enlightening discussion. I did get the AMH test done this morning (but no results till next week). The timing isn't right for FSH (I'm post-o in my cycle).

I have a 2% chance of a natural bfp... Supposedly. So here's hoping that by some merciful divine intervention that happens to me and the rest of you ladies still trying because I got the pricing for ivf today... Ouch.

@spaniellove: Oh OK.. Gotcha. Oh, remember how you mentioned a few weeks ago that the highest doses of stims aren't the best for DOR and I told you that I had done 600 of Bravelle before due to my DOR? Well, my RE said at our consult two weeks ago that this IVF study requires lower stims and I questioned that and he said they are now stating that the high stims aren't the best for egg quality. I thought of you and what you had stated, then I did research and sure enough many RE's are now lowering the stim levels. This is all so fascinating!

OP, so sorry to threadjack!!

@Jenn23: Oh not that it has anything to do with AMH/FSH, just that I think I ended up at the place for more desperate cases. But my FSH didn't correlate that well with my AMH when we started out, it didn't make sense. It was in the 8-9 range and I honestly think they just didn't know how to treat DOR. At that point I hadn't done any treatments yet and had only been TTC 6 months.

@spaniellove: I don't get what you mean? Often the AMH and FSH have a strong correlation (or whatever the right word I'm looking for is) so one is high, the other low, etc. What does that have to do with changing RE's? An RE could say that if you just had a high FSH, too, right? Not sure I follow you. My friend uses Abington and they only do FSH, not AMH and she was told the same thing. Her number was a 17 the last IVF and they mentioned donor eggs. She didn't and had her 2nd successful IVF just two years ago. So I think RE's can mention donor eggs whether is is a high FSH or low AMH?

@Jenn23: Years ago (before TTC) when I was going through the process of egg donating, I was actually denied by two clinics because of my low AMH. I found a clinic that did not use AMH. Yeah, it is interesting what REs think.

@mopeybuthopey: As I just posted above, my RE doesn't think the FSH is as accurate or important, just the AMH, so perhaps that is why yours isn't checking that one. Good luck with all the tests, but please remember that the numbers are just numbers. :) Keep us posted!

@spaniellove:

It's funny you guys just posted this as my RE is the opposite. He thinks that the AMH is a much better predictor of DOR. Here's two sites (just did a quick google) that state that, too although they say FSH is better over 40 or 42 years old. Wonder why all the RE's have such different views about this topic! Just more to make us all scratch our heads and wonder! :)

@CupQuakeWalk: AMH just tells you so little by itself that it's not very useful. And to illustrate how infrequently it's tested and how little REs care, my second RE (who sees mostly high FSH/DOR patients) tested my FSH multiple times each cycle and never once tested my AMH.

@mopeybuthopey: I'm in your boat, so I can't help with advice on how my pregnancy happened. I do have one child but have been trying nearly 11m for the 2nd.
It sucks because I am in the testing phase of it all. We havent done anything with the RE yet, and so we're probably "on hold" for another cycle or two. So far, they say "unexplained infertility". I am mediocre in ALL my results, so nothing good to report, yet nothing bad to report. Everything is just inconclusive. I know how it feels :( I am hoping the iui does work for you! But my RE was saying (since my insurance covers it), with unexplained IF, it may be better to skip it and just go straight to IVF. Mostly for the likelihood that it'll work, but also for the genetic testing.

@mopeybuthopey: I just wanted to send you some big ((hugs)). I really like the graphic @Mrs.Someone posted because I think it makes a couple of really good points. While there are many cases that really are unexplained, my experience and that of my friends is that sometimes REs are quick to say "unexplained" and push for IVF. I personally did not feel comfortable spending the money on IVF (my insurance covers nothing) until I knew we had exhausted every other possibility. I went through a slew of tests and saw a pelvic pain specialist... and ultimately had a laparscopy that diagnosed endometriosis and 2 blocked tubes. So I am no longer unexplained, but it took us a long time to get there and I am really glad I pushed for answers (because having a diagnosis made it easier to seek the right interventions).

@mopeybuthopey: Sorry, I'm just now seeing this, the @reply didn't work... Anyway, I didn't know I had autoimmune issues. I knew I was hypothyroid (but it had long been under control), so my naturopath tested me for Hashimoto's and found I had it (after my first loss). Then after my 2nd loss she tested me for more autoimmune issues, since I think she just had a hunch that it could be the cause. All of these were blood tests, but the RPL panel usually isn't done until after losses. However, I think it is definitely worth a try to ask for the autoimmune testing, a lot of REs don't believe in it though. Here is a link to the lab tests I had (on top of MTHFR and thyroid antibodies).

for all of you who have posted and are now pregnant or have little ones, warmest congratulations. I hope the rest of us join you soon, and I appreciate your uplifting stories.

@Mrs.Someone -- May I ask how you knew you had an autoimmunological issue preventing you from conceiving? Is there a blood test that can be done? I am having blood work Thursday and could email my RE and add that to the slew of tests already being done (if it is that simple). Did you have any symptoms that made you think you may have an immunological issue?

Very interesting about the AMH. I was very nervous about this test -- our RE thinks we are truly "unexplained" but we just started seeing her after being disenchanted with the prior RE's proposed treatment plan, which was mostly "let's wait and see." I've waited and see'd long enough now, buddy. So I am pleased that she's going to test progesterone, testosterone (to check for PCOS), AMH, etc. Thanks ladies.

Well, I found out mine is higher, too, and figured there had to be a mistake but my RE said it does happen! I thought it always just goes down over time. He didn't mention the PCOS thing to me so I have no idea if that could be the case for me, too. Let me know what you find out!

@Jenn23: Interesting! 3 years ago my AMH was 1.25 and now it is around the 2 range. My dr finds it weird that AMH is going up instead of down like it's suppose to over time. My new RE thinks it's a mild PCOS with DOR. We did a clomid challenge to confirm it. I will get to see the results from the test next week.

@spaniellove: So true about the AMH. I forgot to mention that, too.

My AMH was a 1.1, then slowly dropped to a .6 but yet I had 13 eggs at retrieval. Now more than 2 years later my AMH has gone up to almost a 2. Weird! I asked my RE about it again last week and he couldn't give me a great answer but said something about how my body has changed since having my son or something. I don't get it, but basically the point is it is really just a number and who knows how accurate it is and it definitely can't predict if you'll have success. So take any of those numbers with a grain of salt!

I can only speak to the AMH question...there are symptoms associated with DOR but not specifically low AMH. And like @Mrs Green Grass: said, I wouldn't sweat the AMH too much because that number alone doesn't predict very much. Mine was very close to undetectable when first tested and most likely became undetectable by the time I got pregnant, but my RE never felt my egg quality was an issue. There are a lot of factors that work together.

I don't have unexplained, but did IVF for tubal reasons. However, I know three women (two old co-workers and a friend of a friend) that all were diagnosed with unexplained and IVF worked for all of the the first try, plus the 2nd try for two of them. (to have their second child) One of them found out the problem once the eggs were in the lab after retrieval. The shells of the eggs were too thick, so they had to be broken in order for them to fertilize. So that was something they just never knew before doing IVF.

I've looked at SART data many times and you can see the success rates based upon the fertility issues and I've noticed that unexplained has really good success rates compared to other issues. :) I hope you don't have to go that route and that the Femara and IUI work, though! :)

I was also unexplained. I got pregnant on my 3rd iui with clomid. My DH also took vitamins recommend by the RE. I'm currently pregnant with my second which happened while NTNP. Good luck!
