Mine gets really tangly because its naturally wavy. If I don't straighten it it takes me 5 minutes of continually putting conditioner in in the shower to get all the knots out. I don't have oily hair though, it's actually pretty dry so the extra conditioner helps!

You probably need a better conditioner. I also braided my hair frequently and didn't end up with a ratty nest very often.

@anonysquire: I took some of my regular conditioner and put it in a spray bottle and thinned it with some water so it was sprayable. That used to helo me untangle it. I only used it on the ends so my hair wasnt a grease pit since I have greasey hair anyways!

My hair was waist length before i chopped it last year into a pixie (its about shoulder blades now). My hair is also curly, coarse, insanely thick and very unruly. I actually only shampoo my hair about once a week, since its so dry and coarse. I comb rather than brush most of the time. Combing with a wide tooth comb helps with tangles and its less damaging.

I use hair oil also. It helps keep it shiny and soft.

Whoa! Your hair is super long! I have fairly oily hair and I need to wash it everyday. Even my DH comments on my hair if I skip a day of washing it! I use conditioner daily but I don't ever put it on my roots. I probably only use conditioner from the nape of my neck downwards.

I never use a brush, just a wide-toothed comb. I comb before and after I wash it and use a lot of conditioner.

I always brush before showering, and I agree that leave in conditioner is the best (although I don't use it every time). But honestly, the only thing that really prevents tangling for me is putting it up in a ponytail or bun and when I get sick of that I cut it short again! Btw my hairdresser always says it's better for your hair if you don't brush it so much, but I wouldn't be able to leave the house then! :)

I think the main issue would have to be with hair texture? My hair is stick straight and limp so I don't do anything with it. I just air dry and rarely brush it even. I do use hair oil on the ends though - that helps with tangles.
I also think when it gets REALLY long, you have to do something with it when you sleep. Satin pillowcases help, as does putting it up. I know some girls swear by sleeping with them tied up in a handkerchief or a scrunchie. I do a bun w/scrunchie when it gets too long.

When I had long hair (just chopped off 5 inches b/c my LO kept pulling at it and it was getting in the way), I would condition the ends like crazy. That helped with tangling. I also have this Aveda product that I used as well when I blow dried my hair to prevent heat damage. I think that helped too.

@Coco Bee: Hmm, where do you get it?

@mrs. bird: Thanks for the tips. I guess I need to invest in more conditioner!!!

@sunny: Man I wish it wasn't too much effort to wash everyday. I usually wash and wear it down, then the next day wear it up and then wash the next day. I have a stripe of purple so if I wash everyday it will prob fade even faster.

Ugh. Mine is totally tangle prone! Hate that! I have to condition or I can't comb it after I get out of the shower. Sometimes it does get greasy, but not more than most ppl I'd guess. I wash it every other day. If I have it blown out or curled at the salon, I wait til the 3rd day to wash it. I brush before I shower so I don't shed as much hair in the drain. If its a really bad knot, I cover it in conditioner in the shower & let it sit, then try to comb it while rinsing the conditioner out. I'm a big baby about knots in my hair :D

I don't know if this is considered style but oh well. For the people that have long hair, how do you keep it from tangling? My hair is in a ball less than 24 hrs after my shower. So now I am stuck with rats nest.

Do you guys brush your hair before you shower? I am starting to brush it and it hurts and is a pain and I don't even know if it will make it less tangled once I wash it. Love my long hair, but hate the long brushing!
