This kid kills me. Last night she went to bed suuuuper early, woke just as I was about to go to bed at nine, fed her and put her back in the crib. She was still awake and snuffling but put herself to sleep. Then she woke at six and was veeeeery awake and happy. Fed her, cuddled her, put her happy awake butt in the crib, walked away and - BAM! Asleep.

Looks like we've sleep trained. I'm thrilled and shocked still.

YAY! (cheering very quietly so as not to wake her!)

We have been accidentally falling into this happening from 12-18 months, not so much sleep training (just not our thing) but laying him down and hanging close by and letting him fall asleep on his own. I definitely plan on trying it out sooner the next time around. We aren't big into routines or schedules either, one has just worked itself out.

Whatever method works to save Mom and Dad's sanity!

@NaturallyCathy: Just to be clear, I wasn't recommending sleep training. We basically did it your way... letting her figure out her needs on her own. Just once we noticed a couple of nights in a row that she fell asleep on her own, we backed off and tried to see if she would keep doing it. In our case, it worked like a charm, and it she has been putting herself to sleep in her crib ever since.

@FutureMrsMcK: Little man usually puts himself to bed after playing in his crib a while and he only started doing that consistently around the one year mark. E will get there!

@skibobrown: I guess I'm already a screw up because I don't have a bedtime routine. It's taken me 18 months to even begin to get one with my toddler, there's no routine with a toddler and an infant. It's chaos around here! I'm going to try and keep doing it this way since I don't really believe in 'sleep training'. I know it's worked for some and hasn't worked for just as many but it's been my experience that a kid will work their own sleep needs out given time and patience. The patience part is where I usually have trouble but it helps that I have nothing better to do (SAHM).

But that's great with your daughter :)

Now that she's done it for two days in a row, I would highly recommend that you continue doing things this way. Leave her alone to fall asleep after bedtime routine. This is how we did it with DD. We accidentally caught her on a couple of sleepy days and got her to go to sleep on her own. The following days after that we just kept leaving her in her bed to fall asleep at bedtime. She fussed a little bit on a few nights when she wasn't super tired at bedtime, but she fell into a pattern of falling asleep on her own very quickly, with no cry it out or real sleep training needed. It has been awesome!

It looks like DD has put herself to sleep. Seriously. Don't know when that started or how that happened. 0_0

She was giggling in my arms. We were cooing and laughing and snuggling. She was happy, awake, alert! I took her in her room anyways - start the sounds on her swing (I can turn them on without starting the swing and they play all night), turned on her mobile, turned off the lamp, and left the room. She watched me leave. I hear a few snuffle grunts from her then silence.

Absolute silence.

I just walked in there, accidentally stepping on some creaky floorboards to check on her? She is KO. Didn't even stir or groan. I moved her head a little since she rolled onto her tummy to make sure she was comfy and then walked back to the living room. I'm in shock.

When did this happen?? This is awesome! Her brother never did this at her age!
