@caffeinated: I kept the night feedings because she would fall straight back to sleep (even with a diaper change, too!) afterwards so I figured it was fine to keep feeding. She consistently had the two wakeups and then naturally dropped one on her own when she was really into solids. Then starting at when she was 10 months she stopped waking up and slept 12-13 hours straight per night.

I think this is a parenting decision that you should make, not your ped. As her mother, do what your instinct tells you to do.

@MamaBehr: She was getting up at 5am for a feeding, which was okay because i could get some solid sleep. It's the recent 2am awakenings that have been leaving me tired. Please let us know how weaning goes!

We are in the same boat as you. We have done CIO method to get him to sleep, but he still wakes around 3 or 4 for one feeding. My Ped also said that we could let him CIO for the last feeding. I think we might try it in about two weeks, when he is seven months old. I think this is going to be the hardest part of the CIO method.

Well, we weren't successful with CIO until there was no more night feeding. My son's not textbook in any case, with sleeping, so take my feedback with a grain of salt.

@caffeinated: as long as he is normal weight, i don't think he needs it. most babies are physiologically capable of sleeping through the night without eating at that age. But keeping one night feed often makes sleep training easier for parents.

we sleep trained charlie at 4 1/2 months and kept one night feed. but he dropped it very quickly on his own shortly after sleep training.

waking up in the middle of the night past a certain age is a result of habit. because they're used to getting fed in the middle of the night, they get hungry in the middle of the night. if they usually don't eat, they won't get hungry. that's how our bodies are designed.

how old is your lo? what you could do is keep one middle of the night feeding during sleep training, and then wean/cio that at a later point.

@Andrea: Thanks, Andrea. Rubies actually forwarded me this on a previous post. She only wakes up once at night and falls asleep pretty quickly after a feeding. The ped wants me to CIO with her for the night feedings though.

@MamaMoose: i would do the bottle but she refuses it unless she's starving. :(

i think it depends on the child. our kiddo our ped said no more night feedings, but we're going to gradually wean him. i'm shooting for 1x a night then eventually none by mos 9.

We did sleep training at the same time we took away the swaddle and night weaned. However, we also waited to do all of this until my son was not really waking due to hunger any more (would only nurse for a couple minutes and then would either fall back asleep or pop off and cry) so we waited until after 6 months. I have heard of a number of women that still night feed after night training.

I didn't do CIO but I know that @Rubies did CIO and still fed during night wakings for quite some time. I think the key is that her baby could put herself back to sleep after the feedings after CIO.

Here is her blog post!

My LO isn't here yet so I can't help from personal experience. But do you have a stash of pumped milk? What if you did a bottle of pumped milk for either the 5pm or the 7pm feeding so your boobs have more milk stored up and that way you can be sure she's getting a full feeding both times.

Did you still go to your LO for a midnight feeding? At what point did you wean off the night feeds?

My ped wanted me to CIO with her for any middle of the night wakings, as he felt that she shouldn't need a feeding by this age and should be able to sleep straight for 10-12 hours.

I'll usually breastfeed her at 5pm after her last nap, a little bit of cereal at 6:15pm, and then one last breastfeeding at around 7pm. Unfortunately by 7pm my boobs are pretty empty and i don't think she gets that much. She woke up at 2am last night and i was hesitant to CIO because what if she really was hungry??

I know Weissbluth says that some babies need a feed up to 9 months of age, but my LO has gone some nights without needing a feed.
