My kid never did 2-3-4. It was more like 2.5, 2.5, 3. He also did not sleep past 12 hours. So if I put him down early at 6pm, he was going to be up at 6am.

So, if he took a bad afternoon nap, we usually just put him to bed 30 minutes early, but no sooner.

Really depends on the kid. I feel like with DD1, we would've had to give her a cat nap, mostly b/c I don't even get home from work till 6 so we physically can't really swing it to put her to bed early. Also, if she went to bed early, she might wake up really early.

With DD2, I would without a doubt just stretch her wake time.

Thanks for all the advice! He made it 5 hours awake and didn't seem any crankier than usual so now I know! Unfortunately I think he's past the catnap stage so that doesn't really work. Now here's hoping he doesn't wake up at 6AM tomorrow...

@Goldengirl: To me, anything after 5:30 was an acceptable bedtime (Weissbluth says bedtime should be between 5:30-7 for infants) so I would have had no qualms doing a 6pm bedtime...and that actually WAS his bedtime for a while on 234 and then again on 1 nap. He never did well trying to keep him up for an extended period of time. It was more than just a little grumpy - purple faced crying with copious amounts of snot and hyperventilating. Haha. So yeah, team early bedtime.
He still woke up at normal time the next day! The whole sleep begets sleep theory rang very true for him.

@Goldengirl: @erinbaderin: @Mrs. Goose: Yeah, I usually try the cat nap because I know for my LO, regardless of how tired she is, if I put her to bed much earlier than usual, she'll have a MOTN (well, really early morning) wake up. I'll do anything to try to avoid that!

I’d move bedtime up, but only by like 30 min. And expect some grumpiness in the evening :silly:

I'd do a cat nap and/or stretch the wake time. I have a weird sleeper and have never put my kid to bed early because of a shorter nap/ or earlier wake time. We just go through the grumpy patch and maintain schedule because it works for her and I don't like risking earlier morning wake times.

before 8 months, we could usually do a cat nap in a carrier or something, but after that, it was just a little bit earlier bedtime.

@IRunForFun: Me too, I'd try this - maybe go for a walk in the stroller or a drive at 4, both my kids would pretty reliably fall asleep that way if they were even a little sleepy. Otherwise I'd aim for a bedtime around 6:45.

I do a combo. If it were my son, I'd stretch his awake time some but I'd be putting him to bed a little early (probably 6:30).

We kept bedtime consistent. We'd maybe push it 20 min in one direction or another, but we generally had our schedule set with naps and bedtime at the same time and if the wake times were exact we just rolled with it.

I do a third cat nap. So I'd probably try a cat nap from 4 to 4:30 or so and put him to bed between 7:30 and 8.

My LO does great with a 234 schedule. But I'm not sure what to do when he has a day with crap naps and wakes up too early. For instance today, he was up from his second nap at 1:50... which means 4 hours/bedtime would be 5:50 which is super early! He usually goes to sleep around 7-7:30.

For those who did a routine like this, would you put your LO down to bed super early, or stretch their awake time even though they're tired?
