I'm not Asian and have not heard of any of these after cares before? Cold water/drinks makes your bones sore? Interesting, I'll have to keep that in mind! I have horrible joints (and have already been told I will have arthritis in my knees) so anything to prolong that I'm willing to try!

Well the way my mom explained to me it's not so much immediately afterwards but later on in life.
She claims that non Asian people deal with arthritis later in life so much more than Asians because they don't take care of themselves properly after labor.

She has a lot of arthritis problems and she blames it on the fact that she was never able to properly take care of herself after delivery.

I think some I will follow and some I won't. The bathing thing? nuh-uh. I'm showering!! But I will diligently eat all the yummy food she will prepare for me. hehe

ETA: The funny thing too is depending on which part of Asia you're from the traditions are a little different. Like my SIL's tradition is to eat more "hot" stuff afterwards but in mine it's not as much.

My parents wouldn't let me open the fridge or eat/drink cold things (even though all I wanted to eat was popsicles and ice cold Coke!). And they wouldn't let me eat hard things because my teeth would become weak? I don't know but I think that part is true because these days my teeth have been bothering me - very sensitive when I've never had sensitive teeth.

But I showered as much as I could...

I didn't follow any asian traditions. I showered, went out of the house, cleaned, took out garbage, etc. The only rule I tried to follow was not putting my body/hands in cold water. I accidentally did that somehow, for months afterward, the bones in my left hand felt really sore, almost like they didn't click into place. Everything is fine now (thank goodness it didn't last).

One other thing I need to mention, which I am not sure would have been helped by asian traditions - I got a UTI and fever shortly after the birth of my son. I had to go the emergency room for that bc the fever got so bad. But that was cured with simple antibiotics and my dr. told me it is common to get something like that after childbirth.

Maybe you could follow most of the traditions if your mom is adamant about them...but I do have to agree with Andrea that the FIRST thing I did (as soon as the dr said I could) was shower. It was the best thing ever and reinvigorated me.

My mom didn't have me do any Asian traditions and I am ok now. I did have an infection in my uterus after the birth which wasn't great. Perhaps the after care would have helped but I will never know. I suppose it can't hurt but I definitely would not have survived the no shower thing. The first thing you want to do is take a shower!

Did u "suffer"? My mom keeps bugging me about not taking a shower for at lest a week. To not drink cold drinks. To not read any books or write any letters.... She said Asians have weak bodies and we need to take care of ourselves. She said she had carpel tunnel because she wrote so many letters during her hospital stay. She said a church member around my age regretted not taking care of herself because even five years later, she's still not feeling 100%....I dunno... Any thoughts?
