@mrs. wagon: i think i just wore no eye makeup for about 3 weeks. annoying b/c i feel naked without mascara. i had it done in the summer and remember not being able to swim. this was before DS, so I imagine you'll also have to be careful that the kiddos don't touch your eyes.

I got Lasik in 2009 and I regret not doing it sooner! I was so afraid bc I had this fear that I would sneeze or something during the procedure and become blind...but my husband convinced me that I should get it done.

Wearing glasses for the week of consultation and also the week of surgery was such a pain for me...I think I wasn't used to wearing glasses all day and at the end of the day my head/face would hurt from the weight/pressure of the glasses being on my face for so long.

The day of surgery was fine...I wasn't as freaked out as I thought I was going to be...I guess the Valium helped :). The millions of eye drops did not bother me at all but right before they started the laser I blurted out "what if the numbing drops aren't working?!?!" And I guess they touched my eye and asked if I could feel it and I couldn't so I was convinced my eyes were numb and would be ok. The surgery was so incredibly short and uneventful...look at these dots/lights...then a few seconds later they do the other eye and it's over. It was so super quick, painless and not a big deal at all

I was so loopy afterwards and went home to sleep. When I woke up a few hours later my eyes hurt so bad and I woke up crying out "my eyes!!!"...I called the doctors office and they told me it was normal and to keep up with the eye drop regime. It didn't hurt after a few more hours and while some of the eye drops stung it wasn't that bad.

I had my surgery done on a Friday...spent that day/night just hanging out/sleeping and it was fine. I spent the weekend visiting with friends...it was a long weekend so I had Monday off. I went to work on Tuesday and my eyes were 100% and didn't bother me.

I had some dry eye issues but that resolved itself after a few weeks. I'm so glad I had it done before I had my LO bc I couldn't imagine dealing with glasses or contacts those first few weeks. It's been about 4 years since I had Lasik and I have never regretted it...one of the best decisons I ever made to get it done

LASIK was awesome! I had custom through TLC for about $4000. It has a lifetime guarantee which is great.

It's by far the best money I even spent! The procedure was so quick and painless. I do have dry eyes in the am but two drops first thing in the morning is all I need. I had crazy dry eyes with contacts though

@Foodnerd81: ooh, excellent advice, book on tape. Definitely gonna do that! AND I'm totally gonna sleep a lot. I'm booking the procedure for before the weekend and Wagon Sr. will be with the kids... so even just solo mommy time in bed will be GREAT. :)

I hear you on wearing only glasses being tough... I don't even work out right now and wearing these is really inhibiting! I'm getting a lot of sinus pressure with all these weather changes, and I seriously feel like my face is going to explode and the glasses will just rocket off my face.

Even with the valium, I will say it was the scariest moment of my life, right before they started. Hands down worth it, but just a heads up :) Also, I think my recovery was slightly more painful than most-- not really painful, but uncomfortable, kind of burning and sore. And my eyes got tired easily-- like, I'd be fine, but my eyes were just too tired to continue reading on a screen or whatever.

But what I remember the most from recovery was boredom. You can't read, use a computer, or watch TV for at least a couple of days, and I was just so bored without any of those things to do! And everyone I knew was at work. DH called my during the day and was like, what are you up to? My honest answer was, starring at the ceiling. So.... get a book on tape before!

Oh and I did avoid all eye makeup for a couple of weeks-- this wasn't that hard for me since I am not a big makeup person anyway. It was harder having to only wear glasses the few weeks prior to the surgery, since things like going to the gym or for a run were a lot harder with glasses instead of contacts.

@lepamplemousse: I used to be scared of the idea of the surgery, but with all that I've been through in the past 6 months with my eyes, I'm just excited to get it done. But I have no doubt my anxiety will be through the roof once I'm actually there... so I'm looking forward to the valium!!

@Foodnerd81: thank you for all the specific-to-our-area help!! I think TLC is probably the safest and best way to go... just gonna go to the other appointment at BEG (through Qualsight) since I've read great things about them too. Since I have a month or two, might as well explore the other big option.

@Honeydew: so great to hear that 9 years later your vision is still great. I am afraid of my vision changing after the surgery.

@buffalove: did you avoid makeup altogether? or just eye makeup? I'm horrified at the idea of going to work with no eye makeup for 3 weeks..!! I may get prescription-less glasses for this time just to hide my makeup-less eyes. I work with a lot of really well-put-together women!!

@Brassgiraffe: Thank you so much for your detailed account!! Not gonna lie, I'm a little freaked out by your experience... it's the first time I've heard of something not going the 10 minute procedure time route. But great to hear that even though the recovery took longer and you had more follow-ups, you still came out in the end fine with great vision.

Best money I've ever spent, hands down! I had LASIK done on both eyes in March (just in the nick of time, I found out I was pregnant about two weeks later!) I remember a lot so this post is kind of long:

Procedure: Painless; just some pressure from the devices they use around the eyes. I was relaxed and a little giggly from the Valium. I weirded myself out a bit thinking about what was actually happening. It really was as basic as staring at a bright light for something like 30 seconds. My procedure deviated a bit from normal: on both eyes the laser did not successfully make all the necessary incisions so the doctor had to do this manually; however, I did not feel any pain during this step, and there have been no side-effects, recovery-wise.

Recovery: Right away, I could tell my vision had drastically improved, but it was blurry and not perfect. Each day afterwards there were big improvements. I was given several types of eye drops to use over the following two weeks. The most uncomfortable part was that the doctor had me wear contacts for four days straight to act as band-aids. Once they took out the contacts, the swelling I had started going down right away, and my vision started improving quickly. I went in for lots of follow up appointments (the next day, four days out, two weeks, a month, two months, three months, six months).

At nine months out, my vision is fantastic. No halos, no blurriness. One eye has slightly better vision than the other. The doctor said I could do a touch-up to try to even them out; however, he said that having the slight inequality would actually delay the need for reading glasses down the road. I use Refresh eye drops daily because my eyes usually feel dry when I wake up. This dryness may be related to my pregnancy more than the procedure though.

Hope this helps!

DH and I both did LASIK and have no regrets. Definitely a weird, gross minute and a half of my life, but the valium helped! i went home, went to sleep for a few hours, and woke up able to see perfectly....an unbelievable feeling.

i had to be very careful with my eyes for about 3 weeks which was kind of annoying (lots of drops, no makeup, no touching or rubbing eyes) but still so worth it.

DH doesn't qualify for Lasik because of some potential latent condition but has trouble wearing contacts. I would love for him to explore other options...

I did LASIK and my DH did prk about 9 years ago. It was the best money I've ever spent on myself. Virtually painless and my recovery time was within a day. My DH had a longer recovery time about 3 days. 9 years later we still have great vision.

I would ask how many surgeries the LASIK doc has under their belt. Make sure you can find recommendations or testimonies.

I had the custom LASIK done (which you knew). Wen I did it you could put $5000 into fsa so I just maxed it out, but the limit is lower now. I think this is one area it is not worth skimping on though. Go with the best doctor or center regardless of cost- it's your vision you are messing with!

My husband had LASIK many years ago and he says it was the best decision ever. He still has halo when driving at night but otherwise has been fine. My corneas are too thin for LASIK but I was told PRK was an alternative. Decided not to do it because of longer recovery... Hoping technology improves in the future where I will qualify for LASIK!

I had LASIK about 7 years ago. I've only heard of PRK and LASIK so don't know about the other ones. It was the best decision I ever made!

I'm not going to lie though, it was very very scary getting it done. It wasn't necessarily painful but I was freaked out about all that could go wrong and ending up blind. I made them give me extra valium to calm me down. My eyes were tired after the procedure and all lights had halos but that only lasted a day or so. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

What procedure did you have done? LASIK, custom LASIK, PRK, Lasak?

Also, did anyone go through Qualsight? I've read that you can get the entire procedure for less than 3k (so almost completely covered by our fsa max) just by booking your consultation through their referral service.

Also, any details about your experience would be awesome!

Thanks!!
