Caffeine takes me about a week to stop feeling headaches, etc but without it I am definitely droopy in the afternoon/evening. Sugar is harder and took me about two weeks of misery to detox from.

I definitely agree that caffeine is easier to detox from over sugar. Sugar probably took me two weeks to feel normal, but months before the cravings had stopped. But I eventually realized I'm not the kind of person who can do low-sugar lifestyle. After I went back on sugar (like 6 months later) I would go on crazy sugar benders! So my psychology probably plays into my experience. Caffeine was probably 3-4 days of headaches and a week of wanting caffeine, and then I was over it.

I went off caffeine but did it gradually over a period of about 10 days to make it a little more bearable. It took about a week to regain my energy. It really depends on the person, though. As hard as the transition time is, it is SO worth it. Hang in there!

I have always heard sugar is much harder to quit and everyone's body is different. I went off caffeine 3 years ago and never looked back. It probably took about a week for my headaches to be gone.

Coming off sugar is even harder than caffeine, so both at the same time sounds admirable but horrendously painful! Caffeine for me takes two days of headaches on & off, and sugar is more like five to seven days. Also included are symptoms of fatigue and excess cravings for carbs or salty things to compensate, which can last a few weeks! But the flip side is feeling amazing afterwards and full of energy...so worth the effort! Sorry not sure if that answered your question...

I've given up caffeine a few times outside of pregnancy and it usually takes me about a week to adjust. If he wasn't drinking diet Mountain Dew he might be missing a ton of sugar too which can also cause irritability. Cutting carbs takes longer for me to adjust to than caffeine. I hope it gets easier for him and you.

.... how long did it take for your fatigue and/or irritability to wear off?

DH habitually drank 2ish Mountain Dews a day for the past 2 or so years (I know, gross). He gave it up two weeks ago. He is SO tired all the time now and CRANKY. I don't think he has smiled or laughed for two weeks. He gets about 7-8 hours of sleep a night. It could be work stuff or life stuff but I'm hoping it's just the caffeine/sugar so that soon he will be back to normal.

2 Mountain Dews a day is 110mg, 1 cup of coffee a day is 95mg.
