That would be a living nightmare for me. When we lived that close my MIL would stop by when we weren't home under the pretense of taking the dog for a walk (which no, we hadn't asked her to do) and would straighten, fold our laundry (including super embarrassing stuff like my underwear), drop things off that she thought we needed...I know she was trying to be helpful but it felt so so intrusive. And I didn't want to speak up because at that point we weren't married yet. Shortly after our wedding we moved, and this time around she did not get an emergency key.

Eventually we might end up moving back closer to them...if that happens I just won't answer the door if it's not a convenient time for me. Call later and say you were in the shower or napping or whatever, and to call next time so you'll know they're coming and can tell them whether or not it's a good time.

My MIL is about 15 min away. She sees M about once a week but thankfully would never do a drop-in so it's fine. It's great having her (and my parents) close enough to babysit whenever we need it.

We live 15 mins from DH parents and it's far enough where they can't do the pop in but also close enough that they are around I we need help with the girls with pickup/drop off with daycare.

My IL live about 30 minutes away, and honestly, they would come over every.single.day if I hadn't put my foot down pretty early on. They come and visit essentially every weekend and even THAT is overwhelming for me at times. I wish we lived further away, TBH. My parents live 5 minutes away, but they will come during Thursdays (the one day I don't work) to see LO for an hour or two and leave. I don't mind because I use that time to run errands, take a nap, etc. and it doesn't intrude on me and DH's weekend plans or our own family time.

We live about 5 minutes away from both of our parents. My in laws are great at not overstepping boundaries. MIL always calls first and it's usually to plan something a couple days later. When she does call for last minute plans it is usually to help out in some way... Take DS to play in the snow, help with housework, etc. We have a great relationship with both of our parents though! To be honest, my mom stops in last minute more than MIL. But it is usually a nice way to break up my days at home.

We live 30 min away from MIL and DH's family. It's a good distance because we see her about once a month or so, we can go to family functions, etc, easily, but we don't get drop-ins. She rarely calls and just wants to come by and see E. It's just...intrusive. She's very respectful of boundaries. A FEW times a month would be almost every week and that would be too much for me. There's just no time, ha.

Meanwhile, DH's aunts and such drop in on their kids *all the time* and that wouldn't fly with me.

We didn't move to be near his parents. But we live only 15 min away from them. We see them once a week for dinner so they can see DS. Before that, we saw them 1-2x a month and spent a wknd up north with them during Christmas.

When we moved we ended up being closer to DH's parents than mine. We're half an our away though and his parents don't like driving on the highway so we're safe! They never come unless it's with the whole family and his brother drives them all.

how do you like it?

Right now we live about an hour away from DH's parents. We have an opportunity to live anywhere from a minute to 10 minutes away from them. We are looking to move closer to the city and we can get some cheap land and FIL builds houses so this is a great opportunity, financially, to move. I am very worried about living *too* close to his parents for the fear of the drop-ins. I love his family but I would also like to keep it this way :)

Has anybody had any experience with this? Positive or negative?
