@AmeliaBedilia:
My BFP was on the IUI #1. But I preface that with I have several months on complications leading up to that. Nearly overstimulated with Follistim. Ended up switching RE and after 4 months of what I call "prep" work (Synthroid for slight hypothyroid, Metformin for polycyctic, and Clomid-slowly increasing doses). We finally felt (and RE felt) good to do IUI. So good luck.

Had 5 medicated IUI's (2 due to converted cycles), 2 OE IVF's and finally had to move on the DE. Finally BFP!

@AmeliaBedilia: It all adds up. So while I was paying $2,000ish for each IUI, after two of them, I thought I was nearing the cost of an IVF so I just really wanted to skip the third suggested IUI. I've donated eggs before and was told I have fine eggs that produced a pregnancy. (But I'm not dumb enough to disregard that a lot can happen in the four years since then.) Anyways, I've been resting on that, plus all the other tests I've undergone, for thinking that I'm more or less fine and its my husbands low morphology thats the issue (even though RE says low morph really isn't a problem. ugh, then what is?) I know IVF isn't cheap. It pains me to pay for it. But it also pained me to gamble with IUIs. Umm... all of this pains me. FU, IF. :silly:

@agold: I hear you. My RE has a $2000 IUI package for cash pay patients. They have a 20% discount for public service/teachers/healthcare. It's $1000 for each, third is free and you gets refund if the first one works. This doesn't include meds. The meds I'm on are an extra $250-300, plus acupuncture. Not cheap but still much better than IVF.

@bluestriped bee: $2400 for 3 IUIs isn't bad at all! Especially with a return of money guarantee sort of thing. Nothing like that was offered to me and I am the finagler of all finaglers when it comes to working discounts. I absolutely admire you for doing all you could. I just felt exhausted - financially and otherwise - after two IUIs! Like WTF? IVF totally sucks. And I'm not excited to move on to it. I'm not even in a rush, per se, to have a baby. I just feel like, let's get this show on the road (for as little money as possible). :silly:

@agold: IUIs were much cheaper than an IVF cycle for us. So I wanted to be absolutely sure before paying 10 times as much on IVF. I did the recommended 3 IUI at each clinic. (First clinic gave me an unknown diagnosis and second clinic finally gave me a diagnosis and put me on meds.) Both gave me hope that they would work. Looking back, I don't regret the IUIs, I did. I know why I did them. I didn't want to move onto IVF without being sure. Also, my clinic did have a discount if you did 3 in a row. I think money would be returned to me if I was successful before I got to the third one. I think I paid $2400 for 3 IUIs. Though, I did have to pay extra to freeze my DH's sperm each cycle.

@agold: For me, a round of IUI cost about $1000, so it was pretty easy to justify as compared to the $10,000 for IVF (although in retrospect, the 8 IUIs would have almost paid for another IVF...). I also kept having a change of circumstance, like after the first 4 I had a surgery and actually got pregnant naturally (I had a miscarriage at 6 weeks) so figured that maybe the surgery had "fixed" my problem and sort of saw that as starting from scratch.

@PurplePumps: Its awesome that you could get insurance to cover most of your IUI cycles. I'm sure if cost wasn't a factor then I would have done a few more cycles.

@NorthStar: That's great that you've tried different things with your IUI cycles. The first IUI cycle I did included injectible meds plus a trigger plus two IUIs. I responded well and did the exact same thing for the second one. I just got discouraged paying for a third round of the same thing. I'm really hoping this third IUI is it for you! I'll keep an eye out for you on here.

@muffinsmuffins: My clinic suggested three, but didn't bat an eye when I suggested skipping the third. I'm so glad to hear you have a baby from your first IVF. And isn't it so true that all of this is mostly out of our control. That's often the toughest part for me.

We are also gluttons for punishment as we did 6 non-medicated IUI's with donor sperm, and one medicated IUI with donor sperm. Our clinic suggested 3-5 tries as pp's mentioned as well. We were successful on our first fresh IVF cycle and have a 10 month old son. I too remember being so hopeful each cycle and being absolutely crushed with each negative pregnancy test. Getting into hobbies like journaling and exercising definitely helped the stress and letdown. We had a limit as to when we would move on and that end point did help keep it in perspective in a situation that was mostly out of our control.

@agold: We are at the tail end of our 3rd IUI (first with injectibles) and am having trouble deciding what to do next. The sad part is that most of it is because of the cost. I'm also not getting any younger..it's such a hard decision to make when it's completely out of pocket. :meh:

I moved on and did the third IUI because I wanted to try injectibles to see how I responded. I responded great and the doctor put me on progesterone (not sure why when my tests this spring were normal), but I was willing to give it a shot. I'll know the results by next Monday..

@agold: I was suuuuuper lucky that the monitoring done for it was coded as diagnostic for anovulatory cycles so my insurance covered it, and the actual procedure was put in as "medical/professional services" which ended up just being a copay for me. Even with it practically all covered though, we didn't even feel it was worth our time to keep going after 3.

@AmeliaBedilia: It's always so devastating when an IF procedure doesn't result in a positive. All you can do is hope that you learned from this cycle, and go back for the next. We got our BFP for baby #1 on our 3rd IUI. And we got our BFP for baby #2 on our 2nd IUI. They can work! Don't give up hope! Talk with your doctor about what you can do differently this time around, or just know that it's still all about timing. Thinking good thoughts for you!

For the girls who did multiple rounds of IUI, how did you justify continuing on with the IUIs? I did two IUIs at something like $2,500 a cycle without success. I moved on to IVF. I'm not an impatient person, I just hate spending the money on all of this.

My IUI didn't work. I have premature ovarian failure so ART would probably not have been successful anyway. We got pregnant naturally pretty much as a miracle when my FSH was so high 3 months later thar my fertility clinic wouldn't take me!! I really believe I got pregnant because we completely gave up thinking it would happen naturally.

I'm apparently a glutton for punishment because we actually did 8 IUIs, all with injectibles (1 with our first doctor, 3 more with our second doctor, then an IVF, then we switched doctors and I had a laporoscopy, then 2 more IUIs, then a hysteroscopy, then 2 more IUIs, then IVF) before our second IVF finally worked. The only thing harder than the first IUI failing was the first IVF failing, for obvious financial reasons. Fingers crossed for you going forward!

I'm sorry  I voted the 4th IUI:
We did get a BFP on our first IUI but it was ectopic.... so we did 3 more IUIs, the last one with injectibles and that one ended up being a BFP. Our RE had said that usually 3 IUIs are done and if it doesn't work they go either the injectible+IUI route or straight to IVF (depending on the couple's issues).
In my journey I read that it's rare that the 1st IUI takes - it's usually takes a couple tries. Wishing you the best of luck :goodluck:

During the first 3 IUIs we were hopeful we would get pregnant. Then we switched clinics and I got diagnosed and we were hopeful that the next 3 IUIs would work and unfortunately, it did not. At that point, we were done with IUIs and figured out a way to pay for IVF out of pocket. Our first IVF cycle ultimately got us pregnant.

Thoughts are with those of you struggling in whatever step of journey you are in. I hope we all end up with our miracle baby soon.

FET #3 worked for us because we switched to a donor embryo. We had a failed fresh IVF cycle followed by two failed FETs with our own embryos before deciding to pursue something else. We also did 2 IUIs.

I'm sorry I know that place and it sucks. IUI #3 w/ clomid worked. We were unexplained. And surprisingly #2 was conceived NTNP. Good Luck!

I voted IUI#3 because that's when we got our first BFP, but it's a little more complicated than that.

We did IUI w/Clomid and got a BFP on #3, but it was a partial molar pregnancy and we lost it. We had to wait some time to resume TTC because of the increased risk of cancer. We began TTC again with IUI and Clomid. The first IUI was unsuccessful, and the second one I was on Clomid but we missed the window and did not do the IUI. But we must have had really good timing, because I got a BFP that cycle and LO was born 9 months later.

I know it's hard and I just want to give you a big hug. Many Drs suggest 3-5 IUI cycles before giving up, so keep your hopes up.
