We did it at 6.5 months. He had been really sick for 2 months leading up to that, or we might've tried maybe a month or so earlier. But sooner than that and I don't think it would've work. I didn't notice DS starting to self-soothe until 5-5.5 months. If your baby can't do that, then they're not going to learn how to go to sleep, they're going to learn to either cry until you get them, or they'll cry until they pass out. But they aren't learning how to sleep in those cases.

I did want to try to give him opportunities to learn to sleep before sleep training, but it just never seemed to work for us. Drowsy but awake never happened unless we nursed first.

@blackbird: same.

We tried a gentler method at 4 months, and it worked for a couple weeks and then we were right back to 1 hour wake ups. It was insanity.

6 months I tried again and we did the extinction method and it worked amazingly. If you're interested, wall me and we can chat more about it. I find a lot of people are very anti-extinction method and will do anything to talk you out of it. I think it all just really depends on your baby and what works for them.

11 weeks. We have several friends who sleep train earlier (around 8 weeks) so we may even do it earlier next time. If she woke up in the middle of the night, we fed her. But honestly, that hardly ever happened. We "tanked her up" by giving her two feedings closer together in the evening, with the last one being a little more than she would usually have during the day, and that seemed to stave off hunger during the night.

6.5 months. we noticed when we did a check, it would rile her up a lot. so we did extinction almost immediately.

7 months. We also tried gentler methods which was a huge fail for us. I always go to him if he wakes up in the middle of the night though (which is very rare). I want him to know that when it is sleep time he is expected to sleep but if he needs us in the night, we will be there for him.

Do you mean extinction?

I'd suggest reading at least Weissbluth and Ferber's methods, they have books that will educate you on what you can expect with baby sleep and how to deal with it.

I think you need to determine how you'll handle naps, because you may have a little one that needs complete darkness for sleeping (as my son did) and just having a night routine isn't going to cut it.

Did you start out CIO just to put to sleep and still go to LO for all motn wake ups or how do you know when they are ok and know when to leave them to CIO?

First time mumma here, no idea how to start sleep training apart from day/night routine of light and noisy in day and dark/quiet at night.
