@Mrs. Jacks: Oops ok, so she was tested for peanuts AND tree nuts and she was allergic to both.

It is such a bummer to not eat nuts -- they are delicious!

Our LO isn't here yet so I haven't had to deal with this. But in your situation I would be very strict. I have heard that for a lot of kids the reaction gets worse and worse with each exposure. So even though your LO had a mild reaction with her first exposure, that doesn't mean she won't have a severe reaction in the future.

@Andrea: This is a tough question because different allergies are different, with peanut having the potential to be most severe. The peanut is not a tree nut, it's actually a legume... so usually tree nut and peanut allergies are different. Of course I don't know if your little one was tested against tree nuts, so I can't comment on that.

Our daughter is allergic to pistachios and cashews, but her reaction was severe enough that she had hives just from me opening cashews in the car. We make sure that there is no way she can have any contact from those nuts. She's in a nut free classroom because of this.

We also go everywhere with 2 epi pens and we read ingredients pretty religiously. At restaurants we ask lots of questions.

Remember that the reaction that they have the first time isn't necessarily what will happen on second exposure. The immune response usually gets worse once they've been exposed.

Such a bummer because cashews are so delicious!

Let your allergist be your best guide :)

We got DD tested today and she's definitely allergic to tree nuts and peanuts especially. The doctor told us that we have to start reading all the labels and can't give her anything labeled “processed in a plant that processes peanuts or tree nuts”.

DD didn't have a severe reaction, no swelling or difficulty breathing, just a rash that went away in an hour. So I'm just wondering how strict I have to be in reading these labels since we've never had a problem with these products before. She's only had a reaction when I gave her peanut butter straight up. How do you handle your nut allergy?
