@Mrs. Jacks: it actually didn't run through the yard at all - it ran up the beam that supported the pool deck roof, and then ran along the roof and back down another beam. No clue how he did it. I'm telling you, he's MacGyver.

I was wondering how people in colder regions use pools during the summer (I didn't realize pool heaters were so common I guess....)! We don't have a heater for the pool...its already 86 degrees in there and it'll only continue to get warmer. Today's high is 109 and tomorrow is 111 so, no heater other than our weather is needed.

@dagret: We were talking about doing that too. ( I downloaded the plans last night), but I don't really like the aesthetics of all that black PVC running through my yard!

Solar rings are really expensive compared to solar blankets and the reviews are very mixed. Anyone have them and want to weigh in?

@looch: I was thinking of the small round ones! DH said roughly 18x36 and 29K gallons.

Ditto on the solar cover recommendation...my dad also rigged up a homemade solar system by rigging some black tubing from the pool pump up to the pool deck roof, then back into the pool system. He's a tinkerer/MacGyver type though.

My parent have had their in ground pool for over 25 years and we've only ever used a solar cover (looks like thick blue bubble wrap) They live in NJ and luckily the yard gets almost full sun for most of the day. They keep the cover on a roller at the deep end of the pool and it takes about 10 minutes for 2 people to roll up the cover. My dad will typically keep the cover on during cool nights, rainy days and if he knows there will be a stretch of days where no one will be swimming (vacation, busy weeks) so that if will be warm when we return. Typically the water is in the high 70's low 80's by mid summer we use the cover less and less. Typically they open the pool the week of memorial day and its closed at the very latest the last week of september. The cover also keeps a lot of leaves and debris out of the filter system.

@regberadaisy: haha, phew! I found this, it's similar to what we have. One does the job, how many gallons is your pool that you need so many?

@regberadaisy: now i am confused and feel like a dope, is a thermal cover not the same thing as a solar blanket?

What we have is plastic with the little bubbles on it, looks like that packing material stuff that you pop. Our local pool store stocks them in 1 and 3 year models.

I live in Texas so during the summer, I felt our pool was always "warm". However, thermo covers are nice but $$$$. I'd do solar rings since they're cheaper and do the job.

Growing up I had an in ground pool. It had a built in heater, but we never used it because it was astronomically expensive. We just used a thermal cover. Unless you want the pool to be like bath water, it should be fine in the summer with all the warm temps.

We have a pool, it's 26,000 gallons in ground, we're in the northeast. We just bought the house, so we haven't owned it in season yet, but we have a solar cover. We also had a heater, but it was broken and we haven't replaced it yet. We're trying to see if we can get by without it. The only reason I would strongly consider getting one is to extend the season, but as we learned with an April opening this year, it's a huge pain to clean the leaves that fall into it, given that the pool is surrounded by trees.

I'm looking into solar blankets and they are soooooo expensive! I would need like 3 to cover ours. We have a pool heater but its not hooked up. I'm hoping to get someone out to give me a free quote to see what's wrong and how much to fix it. But DH doesn't think we need it.

@TurtleDoves: Thermal covers are not that expensive. Like $70 for a normal sized pool. We live at elevation in a climate tending towards desert, so nights cool off pretty significantly and we lose all the heat we gain during the day.

Meh...honestly? The only time we heated our pool through our system was when we had a huge BBQ the summer we moved it. Other than that, honestly, it gets to be a nice temp if the weather is nice for about 3-4 days straight. If we had 3-4 good days, then our pool would be warm.
I do want to look into a thermal cover. We have a cover (for bugs) but it doesn't heat anything.

How do you heat your pool? We have a regular gas heating system but 1) the thermocouple is out and 2) it seems very energy inefficient.

We are looking at solar blankets, rings, and passive solar heating systems as well as transitioning to an active solar heating system.

How is your pool heated? What are the pros and cons of what you've got?
