We have Boston terriers- they run freely in our fenced in yard when they need to go out. During the summertime we walk them once or twice a week for a change of scenery.

I actually think it's a misconception that smaller dogs don't need walked as much. My big dog is a lot lazier than my mom's rat terrier mix. She lets her dogs out to run around in the yard several times a day, and her poodle mix is totally fine with that, but I personally think her other dog would be happier if she got walks!

Yup! We walk him in the morning before work and in the evening. On the weekends, he runs 10 miles a day with my dad.

I never walked my pom during the first.. 4 years of his life?
When I moved back home for a little bit we started walking him.
He gets daily walks with my sister now.

We open the door, they run out and pee and poop then run back in. Three times a day, that's all they get.

We do try to take them to the park on the weekends. Our chihuahua mix definitely benefits from this exercise, but our pom couldn't really care less.

@krsmall: omg we have a chi and pom too!!!

Our morkie (Maltese yorkie mix) is 5 years old and 7 pounds. I walked him when he was a puppy, but not really anymore. He literally goes outside to the lawn, walks out 5 feet to go to the bathroom, and runs back in. He's lazy. Lol.

We don't let our dogs out unless they are on a leash since there are hawks and owls around. We have a chihuahua and a Pomeranian. We have a dog walker that comes and takes them out once a day.

Awww... I saw your pups in the Halloween costumes! So CUTE!
Well, our little furbaby is a 4.5 lb Chihuahua who now only has one eye and completely blind. Before she went blind and her her other eye removed, we lived in a condo and she would get a walk around the complex at least once a day. Now she can't really go on a walk without a lot of bumping around. Now we let her out in the yard to go to the bathroom and she can wander around for a few minutes each time.

We (well DH) walk our shih tzu nearly every day. They aren't long walks, but she doesn't seem to go to the bathroom otherwise. She is a weirdo.

@mrsjyw: I have to admit I used to walk my dog more when we lived in the city. She doesn't go out in our yard because we don't have a fence, although I do let her go out in our front yard sometimes. What I've heard is that a leashed walk is different from running around in the yard because it reinforces discipline and bonding. One day you'll feel more up to it!

do you walk them every day?

we have a fenced in yard and they chase each other around the house, so we don't habitually take them on walks. we play fetch with them inside the house (there's a perfect corridor from the den to the great room~

but often times i feel guilty when i see dogs on walks in our neighborhood. i hope to up this activity more when i'm home on maternity leave
